Impromptu Cup DebatingWestlake Boys’ High School hosted the Auckland Impromptu Cup debating tournament at school on Saturday 27 June. This is the form of debating where speakers have only 5 minutes to prepare (compared with 1 hour in the normal premier competition). We entered three teams: Liam Rawlings and Sam Baker, Matt Morrissey and Kevin Chen, and Jake Thompson and Brayden Print. After the Saturday preliminary rounds, Liam and Sam broke through to the quarterfinals ranked 1st out of 39 teams on 4 wins. The other two teams missed out on the finals winning 3 from 4 debates. On Sunday the competition moved to Auckland University for the final rounds. Liam and Sam beat St Kentigern School in the quarterfinal, and then Auckland Grammar in the semi-final. They met St Cuthbert’s in the final and unfortunately lost. Liam made the Auckland Impromptu team as well as being the runner up best speaker for the weekend. Sam got a highly commended speaking award (one of 3 awarded out of 78 speakers). |

International Department: It’s a Small WorldIn January we welcomed Sean Goodburn, a fine young man from County Kildare in Ireland who would be with us until the end of Term 2. Sean is in his gap year and took the opportunity to spend this time engrossed in the New Zealand way of life and experiencing a season of rugby playing in the 2nd XV team. Prior to his departure from Ireland a chance meeting with a young man at Sean’s local rugby club “NUIM Barnhall” was to leave an impression on him. This young man was Westlake old boy Chris Winks, in Ireland for a year playing for the local team. Chris was very informative and spoke highly of the school. After such a recommendation the Irishman looked forward to heading to the Land of the Long White Cloud. In a twist of fate now 12 months on and Chris Winks is now the teacher of the student. We hope you have enjoyed your time here Sean, safe travels home. |

It was Westlake Boys who came out on top winning three out of the four matches.
The Premier Squash Teams played at North Shore Squash Club where defending New Zealand Secondary School Champs Tauranga Boys were always going to provide tough competition. In five close matches it was Westlake who came out on top taking the honours winning three matches to two.
The Hockey match between the schools 1st XI’s was played on the international surface at the Girls School where Westlake Boys defeated Tauranga by four goals to nil. In Basketball the Premier Teams played each other at the North Shore Events Center where Westlake prevailed by 85-60. The rugby match between Westlake’s 1st XV saw Tauranga Boys 1st XV take the win 12-10 in a closely fought match. Westlake were leading 10-5 late in the game only for former Westlake student Nick Wilson, TBHS’s number 8 to score the winning try. Nick spent his formative years in form 3 and form 4 at Westlake and was part of the rugby institute programme.
The annual Tauranga Boys High School Winter Exchange delivered another solid competition played with pride and good sportsmanship. Westlake Boys would like to thank all families for hosting the Tauranga Boys participants.

WBHS 1st XV vs Rangitoto CollegeLast Saturday’s top of the table clash proved to be less tight than expected, after Westlake Boys High School coasted to a deserved 26-0 victory over Rangitoto College in the 1st XV 1A North Harbour Rugby competition. After a tightly contested first half Westlake displayed their title credentials, cruising past a Rangitoto team that were plagued by errors in defence. Rangitoto showed moments of brilliance in attack, but a resilient Westlake defence prevented the home side from taking anything away from the match. |
||||
Rangitoto started the match strongest, dominating the majority of possession in the first half. Half-back Matthew Beasley was often creating promising chances, but a strong Westlake defence ended Rangitoto’s hopes of reward. The first half was slow and stagnant at times, with both teams cancelling each other out in the final third. It was no surprise that the deadlock was broken by a penalty; a poor Rangitoto tackle gave Westlake kicker Ammon Moller the opportunity from the spot, which he duly dispatched to give his team a 3-0 lead. The remainder of the half was much of the same, with both teams having long spells of possession but gaining little reward.
After half time though Westlake broke the mould, using their physical advantage to pin Rangitoto inside their own half for the rest of the game. Within the first minute of the half Ammon Moller doubled the Swans lead, with another penalty. Rangitoto’s tight five did well to stave off their opposition’s relentless attack, shutting out Westlake with a solid 15 minute defensive display. However the pressure was insurmountable and a strong Westlake scrum allowed centre Baylee Katipa to burst down the right wing and score the first try of the game. A subsequent penalty five minutes later extended Westlake’s score to 14-0, an advantage that seemed unassailable. A brief spell of momentum for Rangitoto brought the home team a glimmer of hope, that was quickly snuffed out by a beautiful counter-attack, capped off by great finishing from Calvin Vari.The final try of the game was of a similar style with Westlake’s Arno Mouton scoring.

Rangi routed by clinical WestlakeWestlake recorded their fourth win in their premier campaign with a convincing 5-0 home win over local rivals Rangitoto College. An early chance to take the lead was spurned when an Oscar Ramsay corner found a totally unmarked Jaidyn Hendriks but the striker could only head wide with the goal at his mercy. |
||||
Westlake continued to ask all the early questions and soon had the lead; their early dominance deserved when View Rungpao’s driven cross from the left found Jaidyn Hendriks in the box. The striker was man handled to the ground by a desperate defender and Oscar Ramsay stepped up to convert from the penalty spot. Jaidyn Hendriks was at the centre of most of Westlake’s attacking moves and he should have opened his account after he robbed a defender but fired his shot straight at the keeper. Several other half chances went begging before Rangitoto had a good chance to level; only some scrambling defense and sharp work by Finn Medemblik in goal prevented this. The halftime whistle sounded with Westlake generally in control but lacking the hunger and accuracy to make their dominance count on the board. An assured performance by the back four and tenacious work by View Rungpao on the left hinted at better things in the second spell.
Indeed it took Westlake only ten minutes of the second half to get the crucial second goal. Sean Skeens won the ball on half way and fed Jaidyn Hendriks with a precise through ball. The nippy striker did the rest as he rounded the keeper to slot home into an empty net. Westlake’s passing game began to flow and predictably it was the lively View Rungpao whose quick feet and thinking set up Oscar Ramsay who finished with composure from 12 yards. Westlake went close again when View Rungpao played a neat wall pass with Sean Skeens to put the striker in on goal but his shot hit the near post. View Rungpao then completed a man of the match performance when he cut in from the right and saw his speculative shot beat the keeper at his near post to extend Westlake’s lead to 4-0. Jaidyn Hendriks completed the scoring after he got on the end of a superb long ball from Greg Nimmo to beat the keeper with a vicious near post shot.

WBHS 1st XI vs Rangitoto CollegeWestlake finished off the term with a convincing 7-0 win over neighbours Rangitoto College. All goals were open play goals and reflected the attacking philosophy the coaches were after. Three goals were scored in the first half with Keegan Russell grabbing one, Max Simon lobbing the keeper and Sachin Chhiba smoothly finishing. Westlake continued to cause problems for Rangitoto in the second half. The team was well organised and persistent resulting in more goals from Benji Edwards, Ben Williams, Sachin Chhiba. With just 10 seconds left on the clock international student Max Simon scored a goal as well. It was his last game for Westlake and a befitting finish to his time at our school. Max will be missed by all and we wish him well for his return to Germany, his hockey future and adventures that lie ahead. It was a disappointing result for the 2nd XI who scored their first goal in less than a minute into the game and ended up drawing the match with Long Bay College 1st XI 2-2. The thirds had a very good win over Mahurangi College. The team were 1-0 down but managed to work their way back to a 3 – 1 win. Junior 1 and junior 2 both played very good hockey to come out victors in their games. Both teams are playing beautiful structured hockey and are working well as a team. |

WBHS Premier Basketball vs Auckland GrammarThe Westlake Boys Premier Basketball Team travelled across the Bridge to play Auckland Grammar for the second time this season. Grammar was the only team to beat Westlake in the first round. Auckland Grammar won the tip-off and put the pressure right from the start. Grammar kept this intensity up throughout the first half and Westlake worked hard to stay with them; Isaac Letoa worked hard to create shots for himself and others. Even so, great rebounding by Grammar kept them in front 48-38 at the half. Westlake came out firing in the second half, behind a great press that pressured Grammar the whole way up the court. The constant pressure, especially from Greg Vukets at the top of the press, led to turnovers and some quick buckets for Westlake putting them right back in the game. Behind great defence, much improved rebounding and some great shooting, Westlake took the lead by 1 at the end of the quarter, a momentum that Westlake managed to continue into the final quarter. The team maintained the defensive pressure and kept shooting and finishing well, pushing the lead into double digits. In the final minutes of the game Grammar managed to hit some 3-point shots to cut into the lead. Joel Coffey grabbed some key rebounds and Matt Freeman, Logan Hunt and Isaac Letoa did a great job hitting their freethrows down the stretch to record a 92-84 win. Isaac Letoa had a great first game back getting 21 points (6 of 8 shooting), 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Matt Freeman top scored with 31 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Logan Hunt also filled up the stat sheet with 19 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and a block. |

Water Polo ResultsCongratulations to our Junior B team who won Division B against Long Bay College A team 9-7 in what was a tremendous comeback from 4-6 down going into the 3rd quarter. Excellent defensive play and counter attacks with very good teamwork by all and outstanding goal saving ensured the win. Thanks to the student coaches, Andre Jackson and Liam Sheehan for their work with this team. The Junior A team played WGHS Junior A in what was an exciting and tense final which saw plenty of spectators cheering on the side-lines for their favourite team. The boys were solid under pressure and had superb defensive play throughout the game. Each quarter saw a tight result, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and then 4-4 at the final whistle. The boys went into penalty shoot-out which saw goalie Stuart Hofmeyr make some outstanding saves under pressure. The boys won 6-4. Thanks to old boys, Owen Chambers and Brayton Collecutt for coaching the team and Mrs Keen for her management of the team. The Juniors now look forward to next term and facing teams over the bridge. |
