Dear Parents and Guardians

Exams start for all Year Nine and Ten students on Monday. Please support us in making sure that your son is studying extensively over the next seven days.

Last Friday was our Annual Sports Dinner as well as the Auckland School Production Awards. Summaries of both events are contained in the newsletter. Congratulations to all of the prize winners at both events.

Finally, a message to all of our Cambridge and NCEA scholars. Keep up the hard work and make sure you are trying just as hard in the last exam as you did in the first one. Good luck.

Have a lovely weekend.

Auckland Secondary School Production Competition – Showdown Awards

Assassins 1

At the annual Showdown Awards evening on Friday 6 November, members of the Westlake Boys’ and Girls’ “Assassins” cast and crew won five awards (this is the largest number of awards won by any school, equal to St Kentigern College who had two productions this year).  We had 25 students and 12 staff in attendance, and our students opened the show by singing “Something’s Just Broke”, terrifically well.
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Musical – Lina Kim for Emma Goldman
  • Best Sound Design – Chris Lawrence & Lee McClymont
  • Best Lighting Design – Carl Bennett & Nick Brown

We also won two of the four supreme awards:

  • The People’s Choice Award
  • Outstanding Musical

Westlake Boys 2015 Sports Awards Dinner

Sports Dinner 5
Last Friday night Westlake Boys celebrated the highlight of its annual sporting calendar with the 2015 Sports Awards Dinner. Over 400 sportsmen, their parents and staff acknowledged the many outstanding endeavours of Westlake’s sporting individuals and teams.

2015 has been a stellar year for Westlake Sports with 11 national championships podium spots of which six are “National Champion” positions, three are national runners-up and two are national third placings.

Sport at Westlake Boys continues to thrive with 1,600 students competing against the best in the region and around New Zealand. Our ranks of student coaches now numbers close to 100 students all of whom provide valuable coaching support to various teams across the school’s sports programmes. In addition, our young sportsmen are fortunate to benefit from the experience and expertise of a large number of staff and expert coaches. We are proud of the level of passion displayed toward Westlake Sport by all these people and the values displayed for our young men to emulate on and off the field.

PTA Christmas Market

Christmas Market 1

On Wednesday evening the reception area was transformed into a Christmas grotto and the street outside the auditorium and the quad were filled with colourful stalls for the PTA Christmas market.  Everything from beautiful jewellery to scented candles, soaps, toys, garden art, cheeses and preserves were on sale.  There were pizza, crepes, hot chips and ham rolls for dinner and guests could enjoy a glass of wine while they shopped.  The delightful sounds of Christmas carols floating down from the bridge above the street provided the perfect accompaniment to a lovely evening.  We look forward to this becoming a regular event on the school calendar.

Graduation Dinner swan block
The Graduation Dinner offers our leavers, their parents or caregivers as well as Westlake Boys staff an important opportunity to share a celebration that officially recognises the completion of the boys’ years at Westlake Boys High School. It is also the official farewell to the departing students and to wish them well for their futures as Westlakers. The evenings’ proceedings will include an address by 1960’s old boy and international businessman, and man of many talents, Mr John Burland, a formal graduation ceremony and a Valedictory Speech.

Tickets are on sale on until Friday 20 November. A copy of the information letter and permission and ticket order form available to download from the school website here. Space is limited so tickets will be sold on a first-in, first-served basis with a limit of three tickets per family. We recommend that you purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Host Families for 2016

Can you host an international student for our school?
We would love to hear from you!

We are fortunate to have a small number of international students attend our school from around the world.  These boys would like to experience life as part of a Kiwi family, learn English in a caring environment and have a home away from home.

We are looking for families to provide caring family environments for these students.  English must be spoken in the homestay so that the boys can develop their English skills.

Hosting is a great way for you and your family to enjoy learning about an entirely new culture while at the same time enabling these boys to enjoy a traditional Kiwi way of life.

We are looking now to confirm new host families for students to commence study with us from 21 January 2016 (to arrive in NZ from mid-January onwards).

You will receive reimbursement of $270 per week (paid fortnightly in advance) and service and support from our International Team to cover any queries or concerns that you or your student may have.

If you would like to host an international student, or would just like to find out more, please contact Helen Martin, our Homestay Manager, on 09 410 8667 ext 798 or email hmartin@westlake.school.nz.

1st XI Cricket win Auckland 2 Day Championship

WBHS 1st XI vs Mr Albert Grammar School

The first day of the penultimate Championship match against Mount Albert Grammar School proved to be a fascinating contest with 24 wickets falling on the day. MAGS were bowled out for 101, with Cooper Spiller knocking over the top order with 2/3 while Wesley Sleep took 5/8 off 5 overs with his ultra-slow change ups.

Westlake were in early trouble at 30/5 and struggled to 115 all out, thereby winning the first innings. Opener Adam Baard carried his team’s innings with a superb 50, while Ryan Doubell clobbered a quick 27. The day ended with MAGS on 30/4, after Cooper Spiller had another excellent bowling spell with 3/14.

The second day saw Westlake bowling out MAGS for 73, with Cooper Spiller ending with 4/16 and some run outs causing the damage. Despite a setback at 13/2 chasing a total of 60, Captain O’Donnell made a sparkling 32* to lead the team to a 7 wicket outright win.

Two Day Champions: Front (L to R): Adam Baard, Luke Ranson, Ryan Doubell, Wesley Sleep, Keegan Russell Middle (L to R): Ryan Quinn, Ryan Schierhout Back (L to R): William O’Donnell ©, Cooper Spiller, Ross ter Braak, Angus Nicoll, Ben Beecroft Absent: Angus McKenzie

Two Day Champions: Front (L to R): Adam Baard, Luke Ranson, Ryan Doubell, Wesley Sleep, Keegan Russell
Middle (L to R): Ryan Quinn, Ryan Schierhout
Back (L to R): William O’Donnell ©, Cooper Spiller, Ross ter Braak, Angus Nicoll, Ben Beecroft
Absent: Angus McKenzie

This result has given Westlake an unassailable lead on the Championship table. Irrespective of the result of the last game against St Kentigern College, Westlake have won the Auckland Two Day Championship, for the thirteenth time.  However, what is more impressive has been  winning all three titles this season, making it the most successful season in the history of Westlake 1st XI Cricket. This historical milestone has been an outstanding team effort from the Coaches, Mr Scivier and Aaron Watson and assistant Mr Emslie to the astute captaincy of William O’Donnell.

The team now have the opportunity to break another cricket record as they prepare for the National tournament in Christchurch later in the year.

Congratulations to 1st XI captain William O’Donnell and Ross ter Braak for their selection in the Auckland Men’s U19 squad.

WBHS 2nd XI v King’s College 2nd XI

Westlake won the toss and chose to bat and as has happened previously this year the batsmen failed to capitalise on starts and got themselves out. Jono Brewis (47) and Dan Redpath (38) were the most successful batsmen in a total of 163 all out. King’s started steadily but Westlake’s bowlers again toiled manfully putting the pressure on King’s at 147/5. King’s Auckland U19 representative Will St John smashed 114 runs taking his team to 247/7 at the close of play on day one. It will be a tough day ahead for Westlake trying to avoid losing the match outright.

WBHS 3rd XI v Kelston Boys High School 1st XI

Westlake won the toss and batted first. The team declared at 333/6 with Oliver Baker (90), Shreyas Borgaonkar (81), Matthew Thornton (52) and Ashton Howard (52). Kelston were 45/1 from 20 overs at the close of play on day one.
