WBHS 1st XI v St Kentigern College
The last game of the 1st XI Championship took place at St Kentigern College on a belter of a wicket. Without hesitation, Westlake decided to bat and accumulated a good total of 265/9 with solid contributions from Angus McKenzie (52), Ben Beecroft (41), Will O’Donnell (39) and Ryan Doubell (33). At close of play, St Kents were 45/0 with the game evenly poised.
WBHS 2nd XI V King’s College 2nd XI
The second day saw King’s declare overnight with a lead of 83 runs. Westlake had two good partnerships and at 101/2 the team were hopeful to push on and give them a tough chase. Unfortunately the Westlake batsmen again threw their wickets away and the team finished on 166 all out. Only Captain Dan Redpath with 45 batted with discipline. King’s target of 83 was not going to prove any problems and Westlake suffered an outright loss by 9 wickets.
WBHS 3rd XI v Kelston Boys High School 1st XI
Kelston started Day 2 on 45/1 chasing Westlake’s 333/6 declared, needing to reach 233 to avoid the follow on. Westlake began the first session outstandingly well with a combination of tight bowling from the seam attack of Josh Hamilton, Josh McIntyre and Shreyas Borgaonkar. The copious energy in the field quickly led to a double breakthrough with a clean bowled top of off followed two overs later by a plum LBW decision both to Shreyas Borgaonkar. Kelston was left reeling at 99/5 still 134 runs short of the follow on when another two wickets followed soon after. The first to a very sharp keeper’s catch from Will Burt – bowled Josh Hamilton and a miracle caught and bowled by Mitch Whitehead. Credit goes to Kelston and their five 7th form students who played their final match in school colours. They took the score through to 221/6 with a stand of 122 for the sixth wicket which was finally ended with the introduction of spin from Andrew Wickens. Unfortunately Westlake was just short of enforcing the follow on with Kelston getting through to 251. Matthew Thornton mopped up the tail and more importantly Westlake, were able to secure the vital first innings points. Wickets to Shreyas Borgaonkar (3), Matthew Thornton (2), Andrew Wickens (2), Mitch Whitehead (1) and Josh Hamilton (1) and a stunning running boundary catch to finally see off the Kelston centurion from Josh McIntyre. This left Westlake with an 82 run lead for the final session after a late lunch.
Westlake’s second innings was even more distinguished than the preceding Saturday with a second wicket partnership of 152 between Oliver Baker and Shreyas Borgaonkar. Due to the lack of overs available and an outright not being a realistic option, the decision was taken to ensure that the players having their last outing would all get to enjoy time in the middle. Mitch Whitehead, the most reluctant batsman amongst the 7th formers, dispatched the final ball of the day for a beautifully timed pull shot for four. Shreyas Borgaonkar (100 no- retired) Oliver Baker (84), Logan McDougall (56 no)
Westlake finished the game having scored 607 runs over the two days of play for the loss of only 10 wickets. The match featured two partnerships in excess of 100 runs and it was a fitting end to the final game in Westlake colours for Shreyas Borgaonkar, William Burt, Logan McDougall and Mitch Whitehead. Player of the match goes to the Captain Shreyas Borgaonkar for his innings of 81 and 100 no plus 3 wickets. Westlake were able to maintain their 2016 Premier B status.
WBHS 4th XI v King’s College
Westlake won the toss and decided to bowl first on a humid King’s college ground. Alex Divall took the first wicket with excellent support from Harrison Caldwell opening the bowling with spin from the other end. First change bowler Oliver Ray-Chaudhuri then ripped the heart out of King’s batting with 3 wickets in his first over. Wickets continued to tumble with Oliver picking up a six wicket bag, bowling outstanding wicket to wicket deliveries. Along with great support from Euan Grigor who grabbed 2 wickets, Harrison taking 1 wicket and Alex Divall taking 3 catches. The Westlake reply got off to an uncertain start but made their way to 4-45 at the drinks break but powered home from there with Harrison Caldwell and Sam Baker stroking multiple boundaries to see Westlake home with 8 overs to spare. Well played Westlake and a win by 5 wickets.
Oliver Ray-Chaudhuri 6/24
Euan Grigor 2/11
Sam Baker 25*
Harrison Caldwell 24*
WBHS Colts 1 v Botany Downs College
Colts 1 had a comprehensive win over Botany Downs Secondary College. Botany won the toss and decided to bat first. Unfortunately for them the Westlake opening bowlers were “on song” and they were unable to cope with the swing and pace. Sam Brewis, back from injury and having not played since Term 1, was outstanding. Twice Sam was on a hat trick and finished with 6/7 off 5.2 overs. Chasing just 32 for the win, Westlake achieved the total in just over 4 overs without the loss of any wickets. BDSC 31, WBHS Colts 1 32/0, Win to Colts 1 by 10 wickets.
WBHS Colts 2 v King’s College
Westlake’s Colts 2 were given a bit of a cricket lesson by a much superior and talented King’s team. Bowling first Westlake leaked runs and on a fast out field conceded at least a boundary per over as well as bowling 29 Wides. King’s managed to score 341 for 5 off 45 overs with one of the King’s batsman scoring an unbeaten 150. The only highlight for Westlake was a brave catch in the deep by Rhys Wearing in which he ended up being winded. Westlake fell well short of the total being dismissed for 130 in the 45th over due to the quality of the King’s bowling attack and some unfortunate run outs to Westlake’s top order batsman. Two batting highlights were Mitchell Gray with a well compiled 25, his 4th score over 20 in the last 4 innings. Then there was the entertaining 23 no by Jordan Thornton where he had as many lives as a cat and cause much discomfort to the silly mid-off.
WBHS Colts Red v Rosmini College Blue (North Harbour Semi-final)
Rosmini Blue – 168 all out in 43 overs
Colts Red – 172/3 in 34 overs
Colts Red win by 7 wickets
George Smith 62 no, Alec Bennie 39
Matthew White 4/26 in 8 overs (hat-trick)
Nic Knowles 3/35 in 9 overs
A good win against the team we lost to last week. Winning when it counts! Good to get to the final of this competition.
