Dear Parents and Guardians |
We’ve had a great term, thank you for all of your support.
Today we say good bye to Arnold van den Heuvel, Deputy Headmaster, who moves on to a new role in a new school next term. He was farewelled in assembly today and the boys’ warm response to the news, showed how highly they think of him. Arnold has been at Westlake for 16 years and will be missed. The picture shows him with three other staff, Mike Lee (16 years), Colleen Tonei (26 years) and Sue Smith (11 years) at a farewell function we held on Wednesday night. The other three staff members left at the end of last year, It was great to see them back at school earlier this week so we could farewell them all together. |

BasketballRunners up in 3×3 National Slam |
Westlake Boys Basketball sent a senior team to the 2016 Secondary Schools 3 x 3 National Slam played at Trust Stadium from 7-9 April. Over three days the boys played 11 pool games, needing to make the top two teams in their pool to make it to the semi-finals. On the first day Westlake played five games winning all comfortably by at least 5 points against Wanganui (17-8), Rosmini College C (18-13), Rosehill College 3 (21-6), Rosehill College 1 (19-4) and Papakura High School (21-10). Western Heights Basketball TournamentWestlake Boys Basketball teams competed at the Western Heights Basketball Tournament recently. The seniors started off their tournament strongly winning the first match but lost their captain Josh Hidalgo to injury in the process. Playing against other schools premier sides without our top players who were either involved with the 3 x 3 tournament or the Volleyball nationals, was always going to be a tough ask but the team managed to win one out of their next three matches. Water Polo – North Island Secondary Schools Championship |
Westlake Boys Premier Water Polo team had some great games and stepped up in this year’s North Island Senior Secondary Schools Championship held at multiple venues across Auckland. The team grew in confidence throughout the week and showed their Auckland counterparts that they are definitely Nationals contenders.
A huge first game saw coaches, Davor Carevic and Westlaker Jake Bennett remark that it was the “best game they had seen in the last few years”. Westlake narrowly lost by 1 goal in the last 40 seconds of play going down 7-8 to King’s College. Next, the team came across St. Peter’s College, winning 9-5, followed by a resounding win against Kristin School 17-5 before taking on Aquinas College and losing 8-5 in what was a tough game. Another win against St. Peter’s College, this time 10-8 was followed by a narrow 8-6 loss for fifth place against Sacred Heart College. All in all the team have made solid improvements and are looking forward to a positive Nationals tournament in the April holidays. Westlake Boys Senior B team performed admirably in the North Island B grade competition and only narrowly lost in the final. It was a great experience for the team as they played hard and fair all tournament. Mrs Russell and Mr Elliot (parent manager) have been pleased with the teams’ progress. Full article here. |
