On Friday 27 May, the Westlake Korean Night will take place in the Westlake Boys Auditorium at 7pm. The event, collaboratively prepared by Westlake Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, gives students the opportunity to share their Korean culture and music in an evening filled with passion and excitement including traditional dancing and K-pop singing performances. |

| Tickets are $4 each and can be purchased at the door or from the leaders of the Korean Committee. Refreshments will be available and remember to bring some cash to purchase raffle tickets for the chance to win some excellent prizes on the evening. As has been the tradition for many years, all profits from the night will be donated to charity. | |||

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and boys who attended our very first Maori and Pacific Careers evening. This was a great success and a wonderful way of engaging our boys in to their future career research. We have had many emails back from parents telling us how much they and their son(s) enjoyed the evening. Academic Council Quiz Night Friday 17 June 2016, 7.00pm – 9.00pmThe Westlake Boys’ High School Academic Council invites members of the Westlake community to a quiz night at 7:00pm on Friday 17 June in the Staffroom. Funds raised during the evening will be used to support senior students who may experience difficulty meeting expenses to attend our holiday tutorial programme later this year. | After the sell-out Mother Son Breakfast this week, it is time to treat our dads and granddads at the annual Westlake Boys’ Father Son Breakfast, held on Thursday 7th July in the Westlake Boys Auditorium (the last week of Term 2).
The annual Westlake Boys’ Father Son Breakfasts are a special, once a year occasion and are a wonderful chance for you to spend some quality time with your son enjoying a delicious buffet breakfast. All students, fathers, grandfathers or male role models are invited to attend. We are currently in the final stages of confirming this year’s guest speaker, so keep an eye out for more information on the school website, Facebook page and in this newsletter. |

| In 2016 the world celebrates the 400th anniversary of the passing of arguably the greatest dramatic writer who ever lived: William Shakespeare. Westlake Boys’ and Westlake Girls’ have therefore combined once again to bring you William Shakespeare’s most popular and enduring comedy: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
This “…Dream”, however, will be quite different, as the production will incorporate both Physical Theatre and Tikanga/Te Ao Māori, to bring audiences a version of the play that is youthful, vital, energetic, playful and truly bicultural. Unusually, the production will be played with the audience on three sides, partly simulating the experience of Shakespeare’s original Globe Theatre. Furthermore, the first row of each of the three audience tiers will be “Rumpus Zones”, allowing audience members close contact with the actors, as if they were groundlings at the Globe Theatre. The production is brought to you by the same students and creatives who staged the thought-provoking and multi-award winning “Assassins”, by Stephen Sondheim, in 2015. Full cast list here. |

Westlake Boys 1st XV vs Rosmini College 1st XVWrite up by Trey Tupu South – images Ollie Jones The fourth round of the 1st XV competition witnessed the most anticipated match of the 2016 season. As defending North Harbour champions, Rosmini fought to defend their title against last year’s challengers Westlake Boys High School in front of home field support. The wet conditions played a prominent part in the game and contributed to a number of fumbling errors. In the end, Westlake managed to resurrect their 13-12 loss from last season’s final and secure a close, yet well-earned 20-15 victory. This win marked yet another milestone of the two teams closely contested history. |

| Both teams started the game as expected, with a high level of intensity. However, the first ten minutes of the game ultimately fell victim to the wet conditions. Both teams failed to handle the ball with great ability in the face of each other’s ferocious defence, losing the ball at tackle and breakdown situations. Although as the game developed, the players managed to adapt well, employing other tactics in hopes of upsetting the opposition. | |||
| Despite early signs of Westlake dominance, Rosmini managed to get on top in the latter part of the first half. First five-eight Sekuini Tanimo showcased his control of the game by opting to kick and pin Westlake in their own 22. He demonstrated more skill later in the game as he placed a grubber through the Westlake defence, chased, collected the ball, and passed it to his team mate No.12 Taine Wattie, who dove over in the left hand corner. Westlake then managed to quickly salvage some points, after being awarded a penalty in front of the Rosmini posts. However half-back Connor Leather helped Rosmini convert a penalty of their own directly after this, giving Rosmini an 8-3 lead at halftime. Continue reading here….. |  |

Westlake Boys 1st XV vs Orewa 1st XV, Wednesday 18 May |

The third round of the North Harbour 1st XV competition got off to a wonderful start on Wednesday as Westlake hosted Orewa at their home ground. Despite the windy conditions, both teams battled on and showcased great resilience. In the end, Westlake’s superior passing and foot speed saw them sail home, securing a 32-3 win, although early signs of ill-discipline by Westlake saw them penalized four times within the first five minutes. As a result, Orewa was able to achieve great field position early on and secure the first points of the game with Orewa’s first-five Klay Murray converting a penalty kick. |

| Westlake showed great strength to adjust and attack right back with points of their own. No. 14 Jack Fuller managed to muscle over in the right hand corner after a series of good backline passes. The remainder of the first half was dominated by Westlake, with the majority of time spent in Orewa’s 22. However, Orewa exhibited a solid line of defence limiting Westlake’s assault to just one more try, scored by lock Harry Forbes, after a series of strong, powerful ruck displays. A tenacious first half ended with Westlake ahead 10-3. | |||
Hockey Results 26 MayWestlake Boys 1st XI vs Takapuna Grammar School 1st XIThe Westlake 1st XI had a slow start to their match against Takapuna Grammar but once the team stuck to their game plan, moves began to flow which resulted in four goals at the half time whistle. The team managed to improved even more during the second half of the match, scoring a further five goals and taking the final score to 9-0 at fulltime. Captain Keegan Russell top scored with 3 goals. Charl Urlich scored 2 goals and Vice Captain Netesh Sukha, Craig Templeton, Oscar England and Campbell Dye scored 1 goal each. |

Rugby League Results 25 MayWestlake Boys Premier Rugby League vs Mount Albert Grammar SchoolThe Westlake Boys Premier Rugby League Team continued their unbeaten run in the CRL (College Rugby League) competition with a hard fought 10-8 victory over Mount Albert Grammar School away at Fowlds Park. In atrocious weather conditions, ball security and discipline were the key aspects of the day. Westlake started well with a try to centre Caleb Macdonald and a penalty added by Zae Wallace saw the team take a 6-0 lead. MAGS hit back hard through a Westlake error and levelled the scores at 6 all. They then kicked a penalty right before halftime to take the lead to 8-6 at halftime. The second half was a brutal and at times dour affair with Westlake scoring through Fine Inisi in the first two minutes to take an important 10-8 lead. The team then held on through strong defence and ill-discipline from MAGS severely cost them at important stages. The win means a top of Pool C finish for Westlake in the round robin with the CRL top six competition kicking off in a fortnight. Standout performers for the team were Fine Inisi, Connagh Takairangi and Ariki Hood-Kaitapu. |

Basketball Premier Report 20 MayWestlake Boys Premier Basketball vs Mount Albert Grammar School 69-53Last Friday night the Westlake Boys Premier Basketball team played its most hard fought game of the season so far against a very spirited MAGS team. The first half was an extremely low scoring affair from both sides, with each team playing very hard on the defensive end. The Westlake Boys were moving the ball well on the offensive end, getting some quality shots, but they would just not fall. Westlake also picked up too many fouls in the first half, which meant that MAGS was able to pick up easy points at the freethrow line. After a very slow offensive start from both sides, MAGS held a 4 point lead going into the halftime break (27 – 31). The third quarter seemed like a completely different game, as Westlake came out positive and ready to take charge of the game. Behind some great defence and rebounding by the big men James Moors and Thabo Manyere, the team were able to quickly get into transition offense which proved the difference in the quarter. MAGS could not seem to run with Westlake in the quarter and this lead to easy baskets inside the paint or forcing MAGS into fouling. Squash Results 20 May 2016The Westlake Boys Premier Squash teams continued their winning ways with straightforward victories over the weekend. The team of Rafa Yam, Gabe Yam, Tom Taylor and Zonal Ali dominated Takapuna Grammar School without dropping any games at the North Shore Squash Club. The team of David Matthews, Akil Afghan, Jono Beazley and Matt Peagram defeated Mount Albert Grammar School 10 games to 3. |
