A Westlaker’s Journey from Westlake to Wall Street |

| The Westlake community is fortunate to receive regular enrichment as a result of the involvement of our old boys (known as Westlakers) many of whom remain particularly committed to their school and are very generous in their contributions of time, expertise, knowledge and/or finance. |  |

| The benefits of these connections were once again evident this morning when Westlaker Dr Hartley Atkinson (WBHS 1973-1977) spoke to the boys in assembly about his “Road from Westlake to Wall Street” describing the journey of his company, AFT Pharmaceuticals, from the early days based in their Takapuna garage to an $80 million global company that listed on the New Zealand stock exchange market late last year. Many parents may be familiar with AFT’s leading consumer product, Maxigesic.
Invariably, Westlake’s guest speakers offer particularly enriching words of wisdom and the messages offered by Dr Hartley Atkinson this morning were no exception and are definitely worth remembering and sharing …

Visit to Ngatai Whakarongorua Marae |

| On Tuesday 31 May, a group of our students who use English as a second language visited the Ngatai Whakarongorua Marae in Tinopai. The aim of the trip was to explore tikanga and cultural values around kai. The boys were all curious and enthusiastic and they enjoyed gathering pipi; taking part in scientific monitoring of an estuary; learning about Te Uri O Hau whakapapa and they took part in a hikoi through the ngahere to explore traditional kai and customs. | |||
Westlake Academic CouncilThe Westlake Boys High School Academic Council started in 2007 as a group that would endeavour to support the academic success and aspirations of Westlake students. The Academic council is a diverse group of students that meet every week to contribute to the academic programs and support systems that the school has to offer. Previous iterations have included, and been led by, well-known Westlakers such as George Han and Arkesh Patel. |

| The Academic Council is currently involved in initiatives such as the Peer Tutoring programme; this is a programme where senior students volunteer to teach junior students in a variety of subjects during lunch times or intervals. In recent times this initiative has led to the creation of the Westlake Boys High School Study Breakfast Scheme. The Study Breakfast scheme which began three years ago started as a way to give targeted help to junior students that were struggling academically. Under this scheme, the lowest performing Year 9 students would be paired with a senior Academic Institute student. These students would come to the Sports Pavilion one morning every week where they would be given a free breakfast in addition to academic support and mentoring from their tutors. |  |

| This year the Academic Council has specifically been aiming to support students from our international student body as well as our learner support programme. This has been bolstered by the inclusion of representatives of these specific groups into the Academic Council. As a result the scope of academic mentoring for learner support students has increased. In addition, we have decided to target the Study Breakfast Scheme this year towards Learner Support and International students.
You may have seen the semi-annual Academic Council Quiz Night advertised. This is a necessary part in supporting the programmes the Academic Council can offer. The funds raised are particularly necessary for the subsidisation of the Term 3 Tutorial Program for students that may struggle to afford it. For those that may have not heard of it, the Term 3 Tutorial Program consists of teacher-run sessions of the various subjects which can help give senior students the boost they need in their preparation for their external examinations. The $10 cost of a ticket will go a long way in supporting the academic assistance that Westlake can offer. By Rafi Baboe, Academic Captain |

| We will be spending one week Scuba diving at the marine site in Natewa Bay Research Centre and one week living in The Natwea National Park, in the beautiful native Forest. The boys will be working alongside scientists, research, PhD and university students from all over the world. They will also undertake a Jungle skills course and learn how to scuba dive. |  |

| This trip is open to any boys who are currently in years 10, 11 and 12 whom have an interest in Scuba diving, Biology, Conservation or simply experiencing different cultures. It will be especially suited to any students studying Biology, however they do not have to study Biology to attend this trip. Hawke’s Bay-born Darren Shand, ‘Shandy’, took on the role of All Blacks Manager in 2004 after a four year, very successful stint with the Crusaders. For over a decade he’s played an instrumental role in the All Blacks management team, overseeing many notable All Blacks achievements, recognised in 2014 when he was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. | In 2016 the world celebrates the 400th anniversary of the passing of arguably the greatest dramatic writer who ever lived: William Shakespeare. Westlake Boys’ and Westlake Girls’ have therefore combined once again to bring you William Shakespeare’s most popular and enduring comedy: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
This “…Dream”, however, will be quite different, as the production will incorporate both Physical Theatre and Tikanga/Te Ao Māori, to bring audiences a version of the play that is youthful, vital, energetic, playful and truly bicultural. Unusually, the production will be played with the audience on three sides, partly simulating the experience of Shakespeare’s original Globe Theatre. Furthermore, the first row of each of the three audience tiers will be “Rumpus Zones”, allowing audience members close contact with the actors, as if they were groundlings at the Globe Theatre. The production is brought to you by the same students and creatives who staged the thought-provoking and multi-award winning “Assassins”, by Stephen Sondheim, in 2015. |

| Westlake Boys High School 1st XV and Massey High School 1st XV are going head to head in the feature televised match at Massey High School this Saturday.
Westlake and Massey have been stern rivals over many years. In the Harbour era they have clashed 58 times; Westlake emerging winners on 38 occasions. Although the win/loss ledger was evenly balanced at 15 wins apiece in the 1999-2011 period, Westlake has won 8 of the 9 matches since then. Both schools have managed impressive winning sequences over the years – Westlake won 8 in a row from 1985-92 and Massey managed 5 on the trot from 2001-03. Rugby Results 28 MayWestlake 1st XV beat Whangarei Boys 74-0 By Trey Tupu South – images by Jack Hall Fine Inisi’s fast feet and incredible fend saw him flourish within Westlake’s win over Whangarei this Saturday, as the fifth round of the 1st XV competition commenced. The second-five satisfied home field support with an unprecedented five tries, accounting for twenty-five points of Westlake’s overwhelming 74-0 win. Despite Whangarei’s strong performance against Rosmini just two weeks ago, their presence was ultimately unfelt by Westlake, which overran the team in every area of the game. Beginning with a try, scored by blindside flanker Casey Forsyth just two minutes into the match, Westlake continued their attack with the aid of a strong tail wind, which first-five Cooper Green used to pin Whangarei in their own 22. |

| Halfback Jack Heighton also showcased great intelligence by kicking off the back of the ruck into open spaces down the field. One kick was recovered by Cam Hey and passed to Fine Inisi for his second try of the match. Although Whangarei attempted to mount an assault of their own, they were met by a monstrous defense, with one player having to be carried off of the field after a bone-crunching tackle made by open side flanker Jacob Katipa. Unable to turn the tide, Whangarei let their frustration get the better of them in the latter part of the half and this saw their No.3 yellow carded. Football Results 27-28 May1st XI vs St Peter’s College Westlake recorded their first premier league win of the season when they saw off newly promoted St Peters College under lights at QBE stadium. Determined to put the previous week’s heavy defeat to Mt Roskill behind them, Westlake started on the front foot with striker Matt Conroy creating several early chances with his pace and crossing. Unfortunately none of his teammates could find the vital touch needed to force the ball home. Westlake did take the lead in the 6th minute when View Rungpao’s curling cross from the left evaded everyone to find the top corner of St Peter’s goal. Two more Conway crosses flashed across the St Peter’s penalty area but again the chances went begging. Westlake’s keeper, Bradley Williams, then made a good save to deny the St Peter’s striker as he bore down unchallenged on goal. Westlake doubled their lead right on half time when Bronson Kelly won the ball in midfield before delivering the perfect through ball to Conway who finished calmly past the advancing keeper. Westlake took a 2-0 lead into the changing rooms but had not really played with the fluency they sought. A brighter start to the second half saw Westlake spurn two good chances as first Daniel Lough and then Conway found space to shoot inside the opposition penalty area only to see their efforts saved. St Peter’s then pulled a goal back after Westlake failed to clear a cross and the ball fell to the St Peter’s striker who scored from close range. However the home team restored their two goal advantage when Keanen Baghaloo and View Rungpao combined and the latter headed home from close range. St Peter’s refused to lie down though and scored their second goal after a cross from the right was not cleared and again fell invitingly to a St Peter’s player who found the back of the net. Westlake seemed to have ended the game as a contest when Greg Nimmo’s deflected free kick extended their lead to 4-2 but St Peter’s fought to the end and were rewarded with an injury time goal to complete the scoring. |

Convincing Win Sees Westlake Advance in Knock Out CupWestlake Boys (5) vs Kelson Boys High School (0) – Knock Out Cup first round 1/6/16 Westlake’s first XI football side eased into the second round of the knock out cup with a convincing 5-0 home win over Kelston Boys on Wednesday. Several regulars were rested but Westlake still had enough fire power to overwhelm their lower division opposition and took the lead within five minutes of the opening whistle. Right back Harrison Piper whipped a cross into the box for Matt Conroy to loop a perfectly placed header past the Kelston keeper. Drew Farnsworth then combined well with Conroy to create a shooting chance but his effort was well blocked. Westlake continued to dominate possession but created few clear scoring opportunities until the 31st minute when Conroy’s pace saw him round the keeper before he crossed for Farnsworth to score from 12 yards. Conway looked odds on to grab his second goal when he beat the Kelston offside trap only to see his well struck shot impressively saved by the away team’s overworked keeper. The first half ended with Westlake 2-0 up but pressing hard for a third. The decisive goal arrived 11 minutes into the second spell after Westlake broke down the right and Greg Nimmo played in the fast breaking View Rungpao who was fouled inside the penalty area as he tried to get his shot away. Nimmo converted the resulting spot kick to extend the home teams lead to 3-0. Centre back turned striker Nimmo then grabbed his second when Conroy beat two defenders before setting up his team mate for an easy finish from 10 yards. It was fitting then that Conroy, who had impressed all game, finished the scoring when his quick feet and thinking helped him evade a posse of defenders before he toe poked the ball home from close range. Westlake’s next game is a premier league fixture this Saturday 12noon kick off at Auckland Grammar. |

Basketball Results 27 MayWestlake Boys beat Rangitoto 89-80 to remain unbeaten A large vociferous crowd was in attendance for the game of the week in the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Grade Boys competition as the unbeaten pair of Westlake Boys High School and Rangitoto College went head to head. Neither side was at full strength as Westlake’s Isaac Letoa and Rangitoto’s Sam Waardenburg are both representing New Zealand at the FIBA 3X3 Under 18 World Championships in Kazakhstan. Cam Stone opened the scoring for Rangitoto and Dan Fotu glided to the basket for a couple of baskets prompting Westlake coach Phil Campbell to call an early timeout with his team 11-1 down. A pair of Josh Hidalgo jumpers sparked a Westlake revival but Rangi were in control 23-15 at quarter time. A Thabo Manyere block excited the visiting fans and when he converted a put back Lake were within five points. He and James Moors continued the Westlake second quarter resurgence but Stone converted three triples in as many minutes as Rangi edged the half 43-39. Continue reading here…… |

Hockey Results 1 JuneWestlake Boys 1st XI (4) vs Rangitoto College 1st XI (2) Westlake produced a gritty performance against a very good Rangitoto side. It was Westlake who opened the score only to let Rangitoto equalise soon afterwards. Westlake then managed to take the lead again just before half time. Two well worked goals in the second half gave a slight buffer but when Rangitoto scored their second goal of the match things got a little frayed but Westlake managed to hold on to qualify for the Super City league. Goals were scored by Oscar England, Joshua Arnott, Stefan Wiig and Ben Sellar. |

Westlaker Jack Smith to the Rescue! |

| Westlaker Jackson (Jack) Smith (WBHS 2010-2014) was presented with a New Zealand Search and Rescue Award at Parliament last week in recognition of the critical role he played in the dramatic rescue of a young woman who got into trouble swimming at Piha Beach in November 2015.
Off duty lifeguard and Red Beach SLSC member Jack, was at Piha Beach when he was told a 19-year-old woman was missing in the rough conditions north of Lion Rock. After assessing the situation Jack dove into the water to assist and, 50 metres from shore, found the girl face down and unconscious. With the help of bystanders, Jack managed to bring the girl back to the beach and immediately started CPR. His quick decision and action saved the girl’s life and with the help of Piha lifeguards and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter the young woman was flown to Auckland hospital where she remained in a coma for ten days but has since made a full recovery. When Jack was invited to attend last week’s presentation in Wellington he was asked to dress up in a suit. From the range of ties he could select from, he choose to wear his Westlakers tie showing off his proud connection with Westlake Boys High School. Westlakers and Westlake Boys High School congratulate Jack on his brave, selfless actions that so accurately reflected the school’s spirit and motto “Virtute Experiamur” – “Let Courage Be Thy Test”. |
