WBHS Premiers v Liston, Friday 31st July
Last Friday night Westlake Premiers took on Liston at NSEC. Their game in the first round had been a close affair, so this one looked to be another great match. Westlake was still low on able bodies and the team knew they had to play smart to get the win. They started out firing, led by point guard Isaac Letoa, who was hitting outside shots and getting inside to finish strong. He managed to score 18 of the 28 points in this quarter alone. By the end of the first quarter Westlake had built a strong 30-19 lead. Westlake continued to put the pressure in the second quarter but Liston hit some big shots and kept that quarter close, giving Westlake the lead at the half, 50-37.
In the second half Westlake pulled away behind some great rebounding on the offensive and defensive ends, led by Joel Coffey. Westlake got a very solid win, behind some great team play 97-66. Isaac Letoa top scored with 28 points, shooting a very good percentage from behind and inside the arc. Joel Coffey pulled down 14 boards to go with 19 points. Logan Hunt and James Moors had great all round games.
WBHS Premiers v Onehunga, Monday 27th July
Westlake travelled over to Onehunga after school on Monday to play a catch up game for round 1. Having beaten Onehunga in a very tight game at the end of Term 2, Westlake knew they would have their work cut out for them again. Westlake could once again only take a limited squad across the Bridge. Onehunga showed they really wanted this game right from the tip-off, but the Westlake Boys weathered the storm and kept right with them.
Throughout the game Westlake trailed, pulling it to within 3 points at the close of the third quarter. The fourth Quarter started and the teams stayed close, but Onehunga had the legs to pull away and eventually took the game, 67 – 78. All seven boys played hard throughout the whole game, but could not quite get the win.
WBHS Premiers v Alfiston, Friday 24th July
Westlake Premiers took on Alfiston in the second round to start off Term 3 basketball. Westlake started the term with many of the boys carrying injuries and other members of the team playing over in the States. Fielding only seven players for the game, Westlake knew that they were going to have to play smartly to keep the team on the floor. The team asserted its dominance quickly and raced out to a large lead, thanks to some greats steals by guards Alex Yang and Logan Hunt. Once Westlake started getting on a roll the team kept the pressure on, playing extremely hard on both ends of the floor and all seven players making huge contributions.
When the final whistle blew Westlake had taken it 130-29. Captain Logan Hunt had a monster game, gaining a staggering quadruple-double, 24 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists and 11 steals! Joel Coffey had a huge game in the paint top scoring with 28 points and getting 15 rebounds. Greg Vukets, Alex Yang, James Moors, Adam Talma and Jack Castle all had huge games as well.
