Well done to the 300 students who I saw earlier this week following the recent internal examinations. These students were nominated by their teachers for doing particularly well in an individual subject (based on effort, progress or attainment). Their names and the subject that they achieved success in, are listed here. Congratulations to our cross country runners who cleaned up at the Auckland Schools Championships yesterday. We won 7 of the 9 gold medals available in the individual and teams events. In the other two events we won silver medals. This was an incredible achievement from the team led by Mr Strydom. Finally, next Thursday is our Parents Evening for Year 11 students. Korean Education Centre DonationThis morning we welcomed Yoomi Won, Director of the Korean Education Centre to our assembly. Mrs Won presented a donation to the value of approximately $1000 to our school of DVD movies and a large set of educational resources about Korea. Year 12 student, Kevin Shin (MU01), delivered an appreciation speech in both Korean and English. |

Since the centre was established in 2012, they have been promoting and supporting the Korean language and culture to a wide range of groups in New Zealand. | |||
Debating NationalsAt the Auckland Regional Debating Championships earlier in the year, Ford Gooch was selected for the Auckland Blue regional team and Sam Baker was named as a reserve for both Auckland teams. Having two Westlake students selected for the Auckland teams is an exceptional achievement ranking them in the top 10 debaters in the city. Both students travelled to Wellington on Friday 27 May to compete in the Debating national tournament at parliament. |

| The level of competition at Nationals was high, with many decisions going down to a 2-1 split panel decision. Auckland Blue missed out on the Top 4 teams by just 11 speaker points, but it was a great result nonetheless. Congratulations to the overall winners of the tournament Wellington Gold. Travel and Tourism Trip |

| Westlake’s Form 7 Travel and Tourism class, led by long-serving staff member and Westlaker, Mr Peter Rea, spent Wednesday at the International Tourism College to explore and experience the New Zealand adventure tourism industry first hand. The day consisted of theory, practical experience and examinations on “how to lead an adventure group” for which the students gained valuable NCEA credits. | |||

| To put their adventure tourism skills into practice, the group travelled to the Auckland Harbour Bridge the following day, where they were guests of renowned Westlaker AJ Hackett’s Auckland Harbour Bridge Bungy and Bridge Climb operations. The Auckland Harbour Bridge Bungy traces its roots back to 1987 when the activity was still “not technically legal” and Westlaker AJ Hackett first jumped off the Auckland Harbour Bridge. He was promptly arrested and detained by the maritime Police but was happily released only hours later. Needless to say, this particular escapade didn’t put too much of a bump in his, reputedly lively (!), stride. Mr Rea, who clearly takes his teaching responsibilities very seriously, followed in the footsteps of fellow Westlaker AJ Hackett and bungy-jumped off the Harbour Bridge as well!

2016 Burger Battle – Year 10 Food Technology |

| Westlake Boys Year 10 Food Technology students have been cooking up a storm with What’s Your Flavour Burger Battle held on Friday, 3 June 2016. The first annual cook-off tasked students with designing and creating a healthy burger dish with a cultural twist. | |||

| Heats had been held over the past couple of weeks with over 150 students competing in teams against one another. Lucas Rawlings, Eugene Imai, James Ahn and Eric Phuong wanted to take the judges on a flavour tour of Thailand in Fridays grand finale, and with an overall score of 355 out of 400, they delivered.
On their grand final win, Lucas, full of smiles said: “I think it’s the best burger we’ve cooked so far and we’ve improved every time and we did it together as a team which makes it more special than anything else.” Battling for the title and Subway voucher, each team had to plate up a burger dish for judging by Grant Kitchen (head chef of Le Chef and NZ Culinary judge), Jason Rutherford (owner of Subway Smales Farm and airport), Sam Sutherland (2014 MKR contestant and food blogger), and Mrs Sue Maddren (Home chef). |

| It was a great moment for teams as they entered their food technology classroom to see 4 esteemed guest judges and the food technology teachers waiting for them. Although the nerves where high for all the contestants, they needn’t have worried as the judges had nothing but praise when the burgers hit the table.
Team Thailand’s food technology teacher, Miss Shoobert felt incredibly proud of her winning students and said this win was well deserved. During heats and the final this team has showed incredible teamwork, and at times individuals showing great flair and passion. |

| James Ahn came up with the original Thai patty flavour which included traditional Thai ingredients such as Kaffir Lime leaves, coriander, chilli flakes and lemon grass and after much tasting and evaluating, sauces and toppings where added to compliment the burger. The delicious sriracha mayonnaise sauce certainly was a hit amongst the judges. Eugen and Lucas demonstrated strong knife skills and Lucas demonstrated calm and effective leadership throughout and held his nerves when under pressure during the final plating up. |  |

2016 Asian and Oceanian Sailor – Robbie McCutcheon |

| Westlake Boys 4th Form student Robbie McCutcheon, represented New Zealand at the 2016 Asian and Oceanian Championships held in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka from 28th May to 5th June.The race attracted 120 sailors from 15 countries and was sailed in a stunning setting off the beach in the vicinity of the Cinnamon Blu Hotel.
Robbie had a great regatta, finishing 13th overall (number one New Zealander) and third in the Oceania Championships. |

| We will be spending one week Scuba diving at the marine site in Natewa Bay Research Centre and one week living in The Natwea National Park, in the beautiful native Forest. The boys will be working alongside scientists, research, PhD and university students from all over the world. They will also undertake a Jungle skills course and learn how to scuba dive. |  |

| This trip is open to any boys who are currently in years 10, 11 and 12 whom have an interest in Scuba diving, Biology, Conservation or simply experiencing different cultures. It will be especially suited to any students studying Biology, however they do not have to study Biology to attend this trip. For over a decade he’s played an instrumental role in the All Blacks management team, overseeing many notable All Blacks achievements, recognised in 2014 when he was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. | In 2016 the world celebrates the 400th anniversary of the passing of arguably the greatest dramatic writer who ever lived: William Shakespeare. Westlake Boys’ and Westlake Girls’ have therefore combined once again to bring you William Shakespeare’s most popular and enduring comedy: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.This “…Dream”, however, will be quite different, as the production will incorporate both Physical Theatre and Tikanga/Te Ao Māori, to bring audiences a version of the play that is youthful, vital, energetic, playful and truly bicultural. Unusually, the production will be played with the audience on three sides, partly simulating the experience of Shakespeare’s original Globe Theatre. Furthermore, the first row of each of the three audience tiers will be “Rumpus Zones”, allowing audience members close contact with the actors, as if they were groundlings at the Globe Theatre.The production is brought to you by the same students and creatives who staged the thought-provoking and multi-award winning “Assassins”, by Stephen Sondheim, in 2015. | |||

Westlake Boys Auckland Cross Country Champions |

| The Westlake Cross Country Team had a very successful day at the Auckland Secondary School Cross Country Championships on Thursday 9th June in Pukekohe. The team of 55 boys won seven of the nine Auckland Titles on offer over a tough hilly course in windy conditions.
In the Junior grade the team won both the three and six person team titles with six runners finishing in the top thirteen. Jude Darby finished runner-up over the 4km course with Blair Hill 4th and JJ Weston in 6th place. They were well supported by Matt Gould 9th, Ben Lewis 10th and Arsh Kazi in 13th spot. In the Intermediate grade over 4km, Murdoch McIntyre finished first leading the team to a three and six person team victory. With 115 runners in the race, the Westlake team had six runners in the top 16. Murdoch was well supported by David Moore 3rd, Jesper Bengtsson 9th, Josh Spraggon 12th, Nikola Sovljanski 14th and Daniel Robertson 16th. Racing against the very best in Auckland, the Senior Boys won the three person title. Dan Hoy won the Senior grade 6km race with teammate Joseph Clark runner-up and Bradley Hall finishing 5th. Strong performances from Euan Grigor 16th, Oliver Heal 19th and Oscar England 23rd led to a second place finish for the six person team. |

| The excellent results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of all students and staff involved with Cross Country at Westlake. Westlake Boys would like to congratulate all boys on their astonishing achievement and especially Mr Strydom, Ms Booth and Mrs Shoobert, who dedicate many of their hours to the Cross Country and Distance Running programmes. The team look forward to continue their successes in the upcoming New Zealand Cross Country Championships in Rotorua on the 18th June.

Premier Basketball Results 3 June |

| On Friday night Westlake Boys Premier Basketball team played its second home game of the season, against Liston College. Westlake got off to a quick start behind some thunderous dunks from big man Thabo Manyere and some easy baskets in the paint from our guards, Marc Malingin and Josh Hidalgo. Defensively the team were rebounding well and able to push the ball up the floor and were up 27 -12 at the first break. |  |

| Westlake continued the second period as they had finished the first, with Scott Telfer scoring both sides of the break. During the second quarter behind some great rebounding from everyone on the floor, especially Lucas Mennenga (12 rebounds), Telfer (11) and Manyere (10), Westlake managed to push its lead out to 30 points at the half, leading 56 – 26.
Liston came out of the changing room after halftime firing on all cylinders, and Westlake did not match their intensity and effort to begin the third quarter. Liston drove inside on offense and forced Westlake into some costly turnovers on the defensive end and they started the quarter on a 14 – 7 run. Coach Campbell called a timeout to try and refocus the Westlake Boys team. It did the trick and Westlake managed to get the momentum back to end the quarter behind some great effort plays on both ends, dominating the boards once again and looking after the ball. After a big scare in the third quarter Westlake was still in the lead at 79 – 46. Westlake continued the effort from the end of the third quarter into the fourth quarter. Liston kept playing hard. The combination of players Westlake used in the final quarter of Greg Vukets, Luke Day, Scott Telfer, James Moors, Lucas Mennenga and Ethan Martin, used their length to dominate the boards and make it tough for Liston to get inside the paint. When the final whistle blew, Westlake had managed a 101 – 60 win over a very spirited Liston team. Scott Telfer had a very effective game, showing lots of effort on the floor collecting a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Thabo Manyere also managed a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds. James Moors had great all-around game, top scoring with 16 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Greg Vukets scored 15 points to go with 4 assists and 4 steals. Lucas Mennenga did an awesome job on the boards pulling in 12 rebounds and scoring 7 points. |

Rugby Results 4 JuneBy Trey Tupu-South – photos Ollie Jones Week after week, Westlake’s Inisi brothers have managed to bring their team’s efforts to fruition. The sixth round of 1st XV competition saw a similar fate on Saturday, as the two sealed Westlake’s 24-12 victory over Massey by scoring one try each late into the second half. Despite the dismay of the home crowd, nobody could walk away disappointed with the picture-perfect setting of the game, or the nail-biting and fast-paced play which ensued. Truly a thrilling match, made up of two halves, which Massey dominated the first. Their bigger and stronger players commanded control from the outset, making the bigger impacts on both offence and defence. The Massey No. 7 and captain Nathan Vaatausili set the game in motion with a try within the first ten minutes of the game, shocking ‘Lake supporters’ and forcing them to brace for a potential first loss of the season. |

| Although as the game continued, Westlake exhibited a high level of vigilance in the face of Massey’s merciless pressure, holding the team to just one more try, scored by No. 10 Nikau Drage, who stepped and swerved his way through the Westlake defence to score and extend his team’s tally to 12-0. Nikau Drage also demonstrated great ability during a kicking exchange with his opposition No.10 Cooper Green, which lasted the first half, with each player performing banana kicks, grubbers, punts, and exhibiting an amazing competence with their kicking. |  |

| It was Cooper’s kicking which saw Massey pinned within their 22 towards the end of the first half. Massey’s half-back Miracle Naititi attempted to punt his team’s way out of this unfamiliar territory, but his box-kick off from the ruck was well anticipated by Westlake’s No. 6 Lotu Inisi, who swatted the ball down for his brother No.12 Fine Inisi to recover and score the team’s first try of the game. Despite Massey’s dominant performance during the first half, this try and a successful conversion, saw Westlake behind by just 12-7 heading into the second half. | |||
| As the second half commenced the crowd observed a turn of events. A rejuvenated Westlake team entered the pitch with every player radiating a new sense of strength. Lock Blake Houghton began Westlake’s second half assault by securing their team’s kick off to place Westlake on the front foot. Deciding not to kick for goal when given penalty opportunities, their persistence eventually paid off as Blake Houghton pushed over in the left hand corner, equalizing the score. Blake remained pivotal throughout the second half at the break down area, as well as on the run, demonstrating great agility for a lock. |  |

| Despite Massey’s backline making some punishing tackles, they were unable to remain tight against the running strength of the Inisi brothers who eventually scored one try each and secured Westlake’s 24-12 victory late in the second half.

Football Results 4 JuneWestlake edged by Grammar in Dramatic MatchIn a game that was literally decided with the last kick of the match, Westlake lost in heartbreaking fashion to traditional rivals Auckland Grammar School. In a game that could be crucial to both team’s chances of qualifying for the top tier of the Secondary Schools National Tournament, Westlake were desperately unlucky to end up empty handed. Both teams took a while to settle and the first quarter of the game saw little in the way of flowing football or scoring opportunities. On the half hour mark Westlake seemed to come to life and enjoyed an extended period of dominance as their passing and movement asked questions of the home team’s defence. Matt Conroy’s pace saw him find space on the right and when his cross found Drew Farnsworth only a desperate block from an opposition defender, followed by their keeper, kept the game scoreless. Farnsworth then combined cleverly with Conroy to get through on goal, his shot beat the keeper but unfortunately also the far post. Westlake were then desperately unlucky not to take the lead when View Rungpao’s speculative shot rebounded off the bar with Grammar’s custodian stranded. The home team were defending desperately and Conroy again had a sight of goal but couldn’t find the power needed to finish. The half time whistle came to Grammar’s rescue as Westlake continued to look likely to make the break-through they deserved. The second half began in a similar vein to the first as both teams refused to give an inch. It was Westlake who finally got the upper hand in the 66th minute. Left back Clarke Foulds overlapped and whipped a cross into the opposition box. Rungpao’s challenge caused the keeper to fumble the ball and Conroy took the chance to volley powerfully home. Westlake should have doubled their lead four minutes later when the Farnsworth forced a mistake before passing to the surging Lough who flashed his shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Westlake were soon to regret that miss when they suffered a double blow as they were reduced to 10 men, with the dismissal of defensive midfielder Jack Pirie, and then conceded a scrappy goal after failing to deal with a free kick crossed to the far post. Grammar now sensed an opportunity for a win and pushed forward in search of another goal. This arrived m another set piece as Westlake again struggled to clear their lines from a corner and the ball was bundled in from close range. Westlake were rocked but dug deep to find an opportunity to level the match time up on the clock. Conroy used his and pace to beat two defenders and was scythed down as he was about to shoot from 12 yards. Captain Greg Nimmo accepted the responsibility but his spot kick was well saved by the Grammar keeper and the referee whistled for full time. Westlake’s next match is a Premier league fixture against Sacred Heart College, Friday 10th June, 7pm kick off. Westlake Boys Premier Rugby League vs Avondale CollegeThe Westlake Boys Premier Rugby League team pulled off a comeback draw against Avondale College in their first match of the CRL competition championship round. Westlake began poorly allowing Avondale to race out to a 12-0 lead but when Westlake eventually composed themselves, the team scored three tries in the first half to take a 16-12 lead into the break. Avondale started the second half strongly and scored two more tries to skip to a 28-16 lead. Westlake fought back with two late tries to earn a 28 all draw. The result was a fair reflection of what was an intense and exciting game which neither side deserved to lose. Westlake now play Kelston Boys High School next Wednesday at home in a must win encounter. Standout performers for the team were Lotu and Fine Inisi as well as Christian Ma’anaima. |

Hockey Results 8 JuneWestlake Boys 1st XI vs Kristin School 1st XIThe Westlake 1st XI faced a strong Kristin School team in another touch match for third/fourth spot in the Harbour Hockey finals on Wednesday. Westlake started the first half on the front foot but could not manage to convert the pressure into goals. Kristin, however, scored early on in the game and Westlake responded well through Cameron Jones Moore, levelling the score before half time. Several Westlake errors in the second half led to Kristin scoring two more goals but Westlake battled hard and finally got a second break through from Craig Templeton closing the gap. Charl Urlich grabbed the equaliser with 2 minutes to spare resulting in shootouts which went Kristin’s way. |

Cycling UpdateOur Cycling programme continues to go from strength to strength and some promising results have been posted recently. The Auckland Team Time Trials started last weekend at Pukekohe and Westlake produced the following results: Third in Auckland for the Senior Boys – Eamonn Jack, Blake Sunde, Chris Thomas, Reuben Soares and Finn Buckeridge. Fourth in Auckland for the Junior boys A – Nick Thomas, Blake Scanlen, Ewart Bower and Daniel Maddren. Well done to all involved and thank you to our dedicated coaches, staff and parents. The second installment (of 7) of the Time Trial Series takes place this Sunday – good luck to all involved. |

This means that it’s time again to rummage through your drawers and cupboards and bring to school any unwanted / broken phones that you may have. Phones collected help our school gain valuable rewards and the environment benefits as well by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances. Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have into the box outside Mr Hall’s office in Student Services. We believe that the future of our beautiful coastline and waterways can only be secured if we all work together. |  |
