Westlake take three vital points against Macleans

Westlake took three vital points in a 3-2 win against Macleans College to ease away from the Premier League relegation zone and probably book their place in the top tier at the national secondary football tournament.

The home team settled quickly into their possession based style and carved out an early chance when Matt Conroy beat his man on the left and crossed to Farnsworth who mishit his shot from 12 yards to let the visitors off the hook. Westlake’s keeper Bradley Williams then had to tip a well struck Macleans free kick over his bar before Conroy again threatened to break through only to be stopped by a desperate sliding tackle.

The first goal arrived on the half hour mark and again Conroy was at the heart of the action as he received the ball on the left, beat two defenders and saw his cross turned into the Macleans goal by one of their defenders.

Westlake were rampant now and Daniel Lough fed Conroy who crossed for View Rungpao whose powerful shot was blocked by the keeper who reacted sharply to save Drew Farnsworth’s follow up.  With a minute until half time Westlake doubled their lead when Rungpao bent in a wicked free kick from the right and Lough headed home after the Macleans keeper had fumbled the ball.

The home team’s domination continued in the second half as Conroy’s through ball found a surging Rungpao but the midfielder’s attempted finish lacked conviction and the keeper smothered the ball. A flurry of chances came and went as Westlake failed to end the game as a contest and were soon ruing their profligacy when Macleans pulled a goal back when a deflected shot, from an unchallenged cross, beat Williams.

The match tightened as Macleans confidence grew and Westlake fought to control. Relief came in the 64th minute when the home team broke quickly from a corner and Conroy played in Farnsworth who spooned his shot past the advancing keeper to restore his sides two goal advantage.

Westlake were unlucky not to extend their lead when Nimmo’s header from a corner was cleared off the goal line. However it was Macleans who had the last say when they scored in the dying moments of the match after a long ball was not dealt with by the Westlake defense and their striker was unchallenged as he beat Williams one on one. Westlake’s next match is a Knock Out Cup fixture against Northcote College this Wednesday, 3pm kick off at Westlake
