Westlake frustrated in narrow home loss

Westlake Boys High School (0) 1st XI vs St Kentigern College 1st XI (1)

Westlake were left frustrated ruing missed opportunities after a single St Kents goal saw the visitors take all three points in this Premier League match.

Both sides made a cautious and cagey start to the match that was played in brilliant winter sunshine. St Kents had the better of territory and possession but the Westlake defence looked solid. The home side threatened intermittently on the counter attack with Matt Conroy and his striking partner Drew Farnsworth worrying the St Kents defence with their pace and hustle. The match seemed headed for a half time stalemate but in the 39th minute the Westlake defense lost their concentration, allowing the opposition to play two wall passes to create a scoring chance from 12 yards which was duly taken by their striker.

Westlake started the second half with renewed vigour and were now dominating possession forcing St Kents to defend deep in their own half.  The St Kents keeper pulled off a superb one handed save after Clarke Foulds found Conroy and the striker spun and struck a powerful shot that seemed headed for the top corner of the goal.  Westlake should have been level soon after when Conroy latched onto a wayward back pass before crossing for Daniel Lough whose shot was cleared off the St Kents goal line by a defender with the keeper well beaten. St Kents then had a good chance to extend their lead when their striker found himself though on goal but his shot was well wide.

Team: Bradley Williams, Greg Nimmo, Clarke Foulds, Callum Diprose, Trent Baker, Reuben Fitzgerald, Daniel Lough, View Rungpao, Matt Conroy, Drew Farnsworth and Jack Pirie. Subs: Tyrone Stretton, Abdul Al-Majmuei, Daniel Mitten and Joe Benbow.
