Semi Final Match Report: 1st XV vs Whangarei Saturday 13 August

On their visit earlier in the season Whangarei were soundly beaten but they turned up this time a more determined team. However, Westlake, despite a number of errors managed to win convincingly.

Within the first two minutes Westlake broke their opposition defence and only the final pass that went to ground prevented the team from opening the scoring. Dominance at both scrum and lineout ensued and it was from a lineout that the forwards kept the ball and from the maul Leon Thambiran went over to score and soon after Luke Jones scored from continued pressure by the forwards. The backs were also revelling with all the possession they were afforded. Arikitoia Hood-Kaitapu found space on the wing and put in a grubber to beat the cover defence, Jack Heighton gathered and scored to settle the half time score at 17 – 0.

Whangarei enjoyed their best period of the game at the start of the second half and scored after sustained pressure. Their dominance continued until Keepa Wiki converted a penalty following the sin-binning of one of their props. Blake Houghton and Jacob Katipa were dominating the lineouts and Blake was rewarded with a try midway in the second half. A training ground move that worked to perfection saw Arikitoia go over in the corner for our fifth try, thereby finishing the game in emphatic fashion.
