Match Report 1st XI: Westlake earn point in second dramatic goal-fest with AGS

Team: T. Stretton, K. Bhagaloo, C. Foulds, H. Piper, T. Baker, R. Fitzgerald, D. Lough, M. Conroy, D Farnsworth, J. Pirie.

Subs: B. Williams, V. Rungpao, D. Mitten, C. Diprose.

Two days after their nine goal cup thriller, Westlake and AGS faced off again in a premier league game – and the drama continued.

Both teams made several changes with the national tournament looming (where they are in the same group) but the goals continued to flow.

Westlake made a lively start with striker Matt Conroy using his pace to outflank the AGS defense but he couldn’t find his striking partner Farnsworth with his cross.

Conroy could not be contained for long and in the 12th minute he was brought down inside the 18 yard box and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty to Westlake which Farnsworth converted confidently to give the home side an early lead.

Westlake were in command and Conroy had another good shout for a penalty turned down before Harrison Piper had his shot cleared off the goal line by a desperate AGS defender.

Piper soon had an opportunity to strike on goal and this time he made no mistake with a powerful shot that doubled his teams lead.

Against the run of play, and due to some passive Westlake defending, the away team pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 shortly before the half time whistle.

The early stages of the second half saw possession more evenly shared but it was Westlake who made the breakthrough. Piper’s hopeful forward pass caused confusion in the AGS defense and the ever alert Conroy dribbled past the stranded keeper to score his second and Westlake’s third.

Unfortunately rather than take control of the match, Westlake seemed to switch off and allowed the visitors to score two quick goals to draw level. There was a sense of déjà vu when some more hesitant Westlake defending saw AGS score again to take a 4-3 lead with less than 5 minutes left.

To Westlake’s credit they fought back resolutely and substitute Callum Diprose scored a well taken equalizer with a fiercely struck right foot shot.

The final whistle saw the teams locked in a 4-4 draw but this time there was no extra time to allow a winner.

Westlake final premier league match is away at Macleans College this Saturday 20th August, 12 noon kick off.
