WBHS 1st XI vs Auckland Grammar School 1st XI
11800277_1141932659167195_4525727285041839741_nReigning North Harbour Champions, Westlake Boys High School 1st XI Hockey secured a place in the top four in the Auckland Supercity competition with a 3-0 win over Auckland Champions, Auckland Grammar School.

The game started evenly but as the half went on Westlake began to dominate and Auckland had to make some last ditch saves.  Unfortunately for Auckland Grammar the ball hit an outfield player’s body twice on the line stopping a certain goal.  The result was two penalty strokes which JP Rossouw and Benji Edwards calmly slotted in resulting in Westlake going up 2-0 at half time.

The second half was very similar to the first. Westlake managed to secure the win after Peter Felstead showed some great skills and Wesley Sleep finished with around five minutes left on the clock.

Next up is the match against Rosmini College on Wednesday 12th August, 6.15pm at Westlake Girls High School. There’s a lot at stake as a win will mean the team goes to the top of the table on goal difference securing a home semi with high hopes to reach a spot in the this year’s Auckland final.

WBHS 2nd XI vs Auckland Grammar School 2nd XI
The 2nd XI had their first loss of the Auckland Supercity competition last night in a match where the team displayed one of their gutsiest performance all season. Westlake were short on numbers due to a variety of reasons and with 11 players, it was going to be a tough match against strong opponents.

Within the first two minutes, Auckland Grammar scored their first goal followed by a PC in the sixth minute. Westlake managed to keep them out, but captain Alesh Sukha, took a stick to his forehead and had to leave the turf to get six stitches at the A & E. Down to nine fit players, Westlake managed to put Auckland Grammar under pressure and Konnor Baker managed to put in Westlake’s first goal from a PC, levelling the score.

AGS kept up the pressure and replied by scoring their second goal but Westlake’s defence managed to get a long ball up to Pablo Mayer who picked it up and put it in the back of the net for the equaliser. Westlake created two further opportunities, facing the keeper one on one but unfortunately, both were put wide of the goal.

The second half saw Westlake defending continuously and then counterattacking. Several PC’s went against them but the team managed to keep them out. Eventually a small mistake in the Westlake defence led to AGS scoring and once again taking the lead. Westlake were exhausted but they dug deep and kept on fighting. The team kept AGS out until the last two minutes, when they managed to put the final goal past the Westlake defence and the team could just not manage to get back fast enough to cover the attack. It might have been a loss on the score card, but a win in heart and tenacity for the Westlake 2nd’s. Well done team!
