1st XI v Kings College (Auckland 2 day final)

The final day of the 2017 season saw Kings College requiring 150 runs with 6 wickets in hand in order to win first innings. As well as this, the Auckland 2-day title was on the line. Westlake were in turn looking to remain undefeated in the 2-day competition and got off to the best start possible as Keegan Russell struck in the first over. Russell continued bowling his team to first innings victory and cleaned up the tail, finishing with 4-59. Through this outstanding bowling and the help from the other seamers Westlake were able to restrict Kings to 161 leaving them 64 runs short. This resulted in Westlake winning the Auckland 2-day competition and retaining it for another year. This ended another successful season of 1st XI cricket, as the team won 12 of their 13 games. Congratulations to the XI and the coaches, Messrs Tillett and Scivier, on winning the Auckland title for the 14th time in Westlake’s history.

2nd XI v Auckland Grammar 3rd XI

On the second day of this final two dayer, AGS resumed on 64 for 3. The Westlake bowlers stuck to their guns and kept plugging away in wet and miserable conditions. Stand out bowlers in the first innings were Cameron Abrahamse with 4 for 31 and, on debut, Isaac Levido with 4 for 40. AGS were eventually dismissed for 149. With a lead of 77 runs from the first innings, Westlake took to the middle again to try inflict some quick punishment. Westlake attacked AGS with Adrian Young (25 off 45 balls) and Cameron Abrahamse (25 off 14 balls) before Oliver Baker was unleashed on AGS. He ended the Westlake 2nd innings on 55* off just 31 balls. Westlake reached 124 for 3 off just 17 overs. With a healthy lead of 201, Westlake proceeded to attack the AGS batsmen in the remaining 33 overs of the day. Outstanding bowling from Trent Walker (4 wickets for 30 runs off 8 overs), Nick Burt (2 wickets for 15 runs in 6 overs) was not enough as AGS scraped to 147 for 7 wickets off 33 overs at the close of play. Westlake thus won on the first innings. Grateful thanks is extended to Coaches, Messrs Fairgray and Schultz, for their dedicated service to the XI.

3rd XI v Avondale College 1st XI

On the final day, Avondale set about chasing the low total of the 3rd XI and at close of play were 118/2, already 6 runs ahead. Poor fielding and lack of consistency in line and length bowling were contributing factors. Avondale continued batting and despite the rain falling play continued. Eventually Avondale declared at 196 /6 with 50 overs of play remaining. Westlake wickets fell at regular intervals and the team capitulated to be all out for 54, the lowest total of the season. James Barton showed patience and batted for a lengthy time and his 13 runs was one of only two batsman to reach double figures, while Daniel Young top scored with 18. A disappointing outright loss by an innings and 30 runs. Grateful thanks is extended to Coaches, Messrs Milden-Hall and Young, for their dedicated service to the XI.

Colts 1 v AGS

Another wet and dismal day greeted Colts 1 for their last game of the season against top of the table Auckland Grammar School. Batting first, Colts 1 batted superbly to reach 198/6 at the end of their innings. Bevon John Jacobs complied a solid 58 and he was ably supported by Tom Pleciak with 37 and Joe Moore with 36. Grammar proved they were not the top team for nothing. Despite of some very good bowling from all the bowlers, in particular, Jordan Thornton with 3/38, AGS kept pace with the run rate and won the game in the second last over, inflicting a 4 wicket loss to Westlake. Colts 2 v Botany Downs

In what was probably the best team performance of the season, Colts 2 produced a comprehensive 7 wicket win over Botany Downs. Dismissing Botany for 89 in the 36th over was an excellent performance by the team. The individual bowling highlight was Bryn Maloney’s 4 for 18 off 8 overs, where he narrowly missed out on both a hat trick and a 5 wicket bag. He was supported by Scott Sylvester with 2 for 12 off 6. Chasing 90 runs for victory, Colts 2 chased down the total in the 18th over. This was done with consistent partnerships as well as quality calling and running between the wickets. The top three batsmen did their job, Scott Sylvester with 14, Dylan Hamilton with 23 and George Smith with 17.Congratulations to the team who finished the season strongly. Grateful thanks to the coaches, Messrs Scheepers and Wedderburn for their committed service to the team.

Colts 3 v Long Bay Premier Colts (North Harbour Final)

In the North Harbour Colts final, Long Bay Premier Colts won the toss and elected to bat in dull and drizzly weather conditions. It took Colts 3 ten overs to make a breakthrough with Joe Wickens picking up his first wicket of the day. The Long Bay number 3 batsman batted well and frustrated us by scoring a 50. Once he was removed by Rory Price, wickets came regularly with Joe Wickens picking up another 4 wickets to end with 5/15 in 6 overs. Rory Price (2/29) and Regan Diver (2/8) were the pick of the other bowlers as Long Bay ended on 164 all out in 38 overs. Colts 3 opening batsmen Max Harbottle (31) and Regan Diver (17) got us off to a solid start batting very sensibly. Dorian Dixon was once again reliable at number 4 scoring 34 not out to get the team closer to the target. By 5.15pm steady drizzle had made play unsafe with Colts 3 on 123/3. Colts 3 won the final by the Duckworth Lewis method with no further play possible. Congratulations to Man of the Match, Joe Wickens, for his 5 wicket haul and to the whole team for a fantastic season and taking out the North Harbour title. Grateful thanks to Mr Coetzee for his dedicated service to the team this season.

Colts 4 v Rangitoto Colts 2

Rangitoto batted first making an impressive 306/5 off 45 overs. Westlake then made 143/7 after 30 overs. Luca Hanna with 38* and Dinura on 35* were the main contributors. However, as a result of the weather conditions, the game ended with Rangi winning by the Duckworth Lewis method.
