Westlake v Rangitoto on 28 November

A consistent performance from the top order batsmen allowed Westlake to amass a total of 250/6. Jock McKenzie 54, Scott Sylvester 53, Mitchell Gray 37, Alec Bennie 34, Daniel Maddren 22 all chipped in. In reply, Rangitoto began well but the game turned in Jordan Thornton’s first over when he took a hat trick and almost had 4 wickets in 4 balls. Jordan Thornton ended on 4/44, ably supported by Sam Reidy with 2/34. Rangitoto went to 83 for 5 after being 81 for 2 in the 21st over. Westlake failed to take the advantage and Rangitoto batted out the 45 overs ending on 206/9. Thus, a win to the Yr10 team by 44 runs.

Westlake v Whangarei Boys on 29 November

Westlake dismissed Whangarei in the 37th over for a total of 166 thanks to a much improved fielding performance, where some fine catches were taken. Alec Bennie led the way with three , Jock McKenzie took two and the champagne moment went to Ben Drown’ s pivotal catch. The stand out bowler was Jordan Thornton with 3/29. He was well supported by Ben Drown with 2/19 and Jarryd Russell 3/19. Chasing the total, Westlake were 2 for 20 when Jock McKenzie joined Mitchell Gray at the wicket and both batted steadily through to the drinks break when Westlake were 2 for 73. They then put the accelerator down to reach the total in the 34th over. Both Jock and Mitchell reached their half century to finish with 61* and 66* respectfully, as the team cruised to 167/2 and achieved a comfortable 8 wicket win.

Westlake v Rosmini College on 30 November

Westlake batted first in the game against Rosmini and were in trouble at 4 for 43 in the 18th over. With the 5th wicket falling just after the 22 over innings break at 56 this looked less likely. Then one partnership followed another and thanks to a belligerent 28 from opener Daniel Maddren, an entertaining 31 from Rhys Wearing and a feisty 22 from Jordan Thornton, Westlake were eventually dismissed for 160. Rosmini began the chase with a positive intent and they were well in control at 81 for 2 in the 14th over. However, the regular loss of wickets by Rosmini saw the run rate begin to fall. Joseph Moore with 2/19 and Jock McKenzie with 2/26 were the pick of the bowlers. However Rosmini eventually reached the desired total for the loss of seven wickets, thereby inflicting a loss by 3 wickets.

This result meant that both teams had two wins in the tournament, but Westlake retained the Russell Glackin trophy due to a better run rate. Individual awards were collected by Jordan Thornton whose 8 wickets in the tournament were the most taken. Jock Mackenzie collected the player of the tournament with runs, wickets and catches. Thanks to Rosmini for hosting and organising the tournament. Next year they voyage to the winterless North where, Whangarei will be keen to make use of home field advantage.
