Four sport codes were contested during the highly anticipated annual Tauranga Boys High School Winter Exchange hosted at Westlake Boys High School on Tuesday 30th June.
Over 70 Tauranga Boys’ students accompanied by eight Tauranga Boys staff members were accommodated by Westlake Boys families on Monday evening and competed against their peers in squash, hockey, basketball and rugby the next day. It was Westlake Boys who came out on top winning three out of the four matches.
The Premier Squash Teams played at North Shore Squash Club where defending New Zealand Secondary School Champs Tauranga Boys were always going to provide tough competition. In five close matches it was Westlake who came out on top taking the honours winning three matches to two. The Hockey match between the schools 1st XI’s was played on the international surface at the Girls School where Westlake Boys defeated Tauranga by four goals to nil. In Basketball the Premier Teams played each other at the North Shore Events Center where Westlake prevailed by 85-60. The rugby match between Westlake’s 1st XV saw Tauranga Boys 1st XV take the win 12-10 in a closely fought match. Westlake were leading 10-5 late in the game only for former Westlake student Nick Wilson, TBHS’s number 8 to score the winning try. Nick spent his formative years in form 3 and form 4 at Westlake and was part of the rugby institute programme.
The annual Tauranga Boys High School Winter Exchange delivered another solid competition played with pride and good sportsmanship. Westlake Boys would like to thank all families for hosting the Tauranga Boys participants.
