WBHS 1st XV vs Rangitoto College 1st XV – semi-final
Westlake Boys played Rangitoto College in front of their home crowd in the semi-final of the North Harbour 1st XV competition. With a hard fought away win against Westlake earlier in the season and a finals spot at Harbour stadium on the line, the Rangitoto team started the game energised from the kickoff. They were awarded a penalty almost immediately when Westlake was penalised for holding onto the ball. Westlake retaliated from their kickoff battering their opponent on attack. Kanui Walker gained good yards and made it possible for the Westlake forwards to keep the ball in play. Blake Houghton managed to get hold of the ball and scored the first try of the day converted by Sam Babb who definitely had his kicking boots on securing the three penalties that were awarded to Westlake.
Rangitoto added 3 more from a penalty but from there on it was the Westlake team who dominated the game. Lotu Inisi, Fine Inisi and Logan Lawrence threatened the Rangitoto defence with an awesome attack which was finished off with Logan scoring a try. It did not take Westlake long to score their next try after securing the ball in a line out, Calvin Vari side-stepped through the Rangi defense and scored his try of the day. Half time score Westlake 26-Rangitoto 6.
The first twenty minutes of the second half was game on and Rangitoto tried to attack with every possession of the ball. Yet Westlake performed impeccably in defence, an area in which they have grown from strength to strength throughout their season. Westlake continued to attack their opponents’ defensive line and were able to score a try with Ammon Moller surprising Rangitoto with a flick of the ball to Cameron Hey to score his try for the day converted by Sam Babb.
Rangitoto were adamant not to give up but Jack Heighton managed to intercept the ball to score a try under the goal post, again converted by Sam Babb. Logan Lawrence finished the game with another try taking the final scoreline out to 45-6.
The win secured Westlake a final spot against archrivals Rosmini College in the North Harbour 1st XV final at Harbour Stadium this Thursday. The match is a curtain raiser for the North Harbour vs Wellington ITM Cup match. Kick-off 5.35pm.

WBHS 2nd XV vs Massey High School 2nd XV
The Westlake 2nd XV produced probably their best performance of the season in testing conditions on Saturday. Playing a spirited Massey team, home semi-finals were riding on this result. Westlake played to the condition brilliantly, controlling field position and coming away with points every time they were on offer. Thomas Red and Cameron Abrahamse kicked beautifully out of hand and off the tee. The workrate of Geoff Heck and Declan Barbarich made sure Westlake enjoyed quality front foot ball. In the end Westlake ran out comfortable winners by 25-0.
WBHS 4th XV vs Kristin School 1st XV
In what proved to be their last game of the season, the fighting fourths came undone to a better prepared Kristin School 1st XV who made the most of a couple of moments of weakness in the 4ths defence. Westlake played with passion dominating in patches and scored two well executed tries, one to captain Tommy Smith and one to Patrick Corcoran. Early in the second half with their line under threat the team defended and prevented Kristin from scoring, showing great team character and unity. The second half saw both teams score unconverted tries, however the game was won by Kristin 24 to 12.
It was the end to a gusty season by a team that played well above themselves against mostly teams with small numbers in front of the XV. Thanks firstly to Hatu Tiakia and Callum Dickison for their help with the coaching of the team and the stalwart parents who have supported their sons. The biggest thanks to the players for the pleasure of making Saturday mornings an enjoyable time for the coach. Boys, well done!
