Westlake end Football league season on a high note
Westlake first XI finished their Premier league season with a convincing 5-0 home win over King’s College. The home team dominated possession and territory from start to finish but only really found their scoring touch in the second half.
Jaidyn Hendriks used his pace to terrorize the King’s defense on numerous occasions early in the match without finding the back of the net or a supporting team mate. However, in the 16th minute he beat his marker again and this time his pass found Braedan Acarapi who bundled the ball into the net from six yards. The rest of the first half consisted of Westlake pinning King’s into their defensive third without finding the accuracy needed to extend their 1-0 lead. King’s were a threat from set pieces but struggled to keep possession for long enough to ask serious questions of the Westlake defense.
The second half followed much of the same pattern though Westlake’s keeper, Finn Medemblik, had to be on his toes to palm over a good long range shot early in the piece. In the 51st minute Westlake doubled their lead and it was Jaidyn Hendriks again, who outpaced the King’s defense before squaring the ball to substitute Matt Conroy who tapped home from six yards for his debut goal for the first team.
Ten minutes later Sean Skeens dribbled through the heart of the King’s defense before being fouled in the penalty box. The striker took the resulting penalty which the King’s keeper saved only for Sean Skeens to smash home the rebound. Sean had his double soon afterwards when Bronson Kelly set him up and the striker drilled the ball home from 20 yards out with a great strike. Dynamic midfielder Bronson Kelly had the last word when he met a cross from the left and looped a lovely header over the King’s keeper for his team’s fifth and final goal.
This home win confirmed Westlake’s fifth place in the premier league. The team now travel to Nelson to compete in the top 16 of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Lotto National tournament (31st August-4 September).
