Dear Parents and GuardiansWelcome back to school. I trust your sons have had a good break and are looking forward to a busy term ahead. We have senior exams in weeks 6 and 7, so all of our students in Years 11-13 should be starting their work towards these. Our school production has been running this week: Assassins has been a great success and we are very proud of everyone involved in it. The winter sports programme starts up in earnest this weekend as well. Good luck to all those representing the school. Regards |

“Assassins”, by Stephen Sondheim & John Weidman: July 21st – 24th JulyFor four nights, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s musical enthralled, shocked, delighted and surprised Westlake audiences, on stage in the Boys’ School Auditorium. A collaboration between Westlake Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, “Assassins” involved 35 students onstage in acting roles, 15 in the orchestra and another 10 in backstage/technical roles, as well as more than 10 teachers in supporting roles. The response to “Assassins” was extremely positive, with audiences delighted by the wide range of outstanding acting and singing talent onstage, as well as the remarkable high-quality of the orchestra. The musical detailed the stories of a number of American presidential assassins, and thus gave many students exciting, yet demanding, acting opportunities. It also afforded those in the large ensemble a chance to sing some of the most challenging music ever written for the musical stage, and also play a variety of Presidents and historical characters. |
|||
|
|||
The design for the production was unique, and cutting edge, using both still and dynamic projected images. Amongst these was a stunning electric chair effect, and the moment that it ‘rained’ onstage.Westlake Schools are grateful to all those who contributed to the success of this production, and to all those who attended.An announcement about the 2016 production will be made before the end of the year.

Sydney Football Tour 2015 |
|||
The July school holidays saw the Under 14 and Under 15 WBHS Football teams embark on a week-long football trip to the NSW/FFA High Performance Football Centre (Valentine Sports Park) in Sydney. After the obligatory photograph at the Departure Gate and short journey over ‘the ditch’ we were settled into our accommodation and ready to start our games.
A bright and sunny Sydney morning provided the back drop for our first games (vs. Mt. Druitt FC) on some immaculate surfaces. It was immediately evident that the information about Australian club teams being well organised, technically gifted and tactically astute would prove to be correct. The U14 defended gallantly to finish up with a 0-0 draw and the U15 eventually lost 3-1 owing to some clinical finishing. That evening saw us take in some live NRL at the ANZ stadium, before heading to bed after an enjoyable first day. Our next games (vs. Apia Leichardt FC) were a mixed bag of results, with the U14 winning 3-1 and the U15 unable to get a reward for their industrious performance, losing 2-0.
Some well-deserved rest and relaxation was due and the players took to the recovery pool to cool off any aching limbs and prepare for our games the next day, these being against a very diligent and effective club – Sydney United FC. A spirited performance from the U14 team saw them draw 2-2 and despite a strong showing from the U15 some late goals saw them go down 3-1 at the final whistle. After dinner, the players were met by two of the Central Coast Mariners first team players and during a Q&A session were given an insight into the life of a professional footballer. This proved to be an interesting and motivating session that highlighted the hard work and dedication that is required to succeed at the higher echelons of the sport.
Sydney continued to bless us with excellent weather and this ensured we could enjoy two excellent coaching sessions with the NSW FFA Technical Director – Alex Tobin (87 caps for Australia). Mr Tobin complimented our players highly on their skill levels but also their attitude manners and positive approach to all he asked them to do – high praise from Australia’s second highest appearance maker and FIFA World Cup player.
The order of the day from here on in was some retail therapy and the students were all too happy to see their dollars change from NZ ones to Australian ones and then snap up some bargains in the mall. A short pre-match meal was to follow before we got ready for our final set of games. The U14 team played St. George FC, who proved to be too quick and agile for our players and were good value in their 6-1 defeat of the Westlake team. The U15 squad however had saved their best performance for their last game. The team started the game at an electric pace and pressed their opponents (Hills Brumbies FC) into errors in possession. All of the U15’s hard work and positive attitude was repaid in full as they romped home to a 5-1 win, a fitting tribute to staying positive, focused and determined even when results hadn’t gone their way.Our competitive football matches were now complete and the players could enjoy some Futsal coaching before an excellent Sydney Harbour cruise, sightseeing and dinner in Darling Harbour. We headed back to our accommodation for the last time, content in the knowledge that the players had worked hard, learnt some new facets of the game and had bonded well with each other. The next day we headed to the airport, made our way to the departure gate to then find our flight had been cancelled. We were then quickly ushered to a four star hotel for one final unscheduled night before flying back home later than expected.
All in all, we had a fantastic tour that produced some amazing memories on and off the field. The players represented Westlake with pride, dignity, determination and a positive attitude. The frequent and genuine compliments on our manners, behaviour and conduct throughout the tour were testament to the boys and the positive football culture that exists at our school.

Basketball Under 17 League 2In Under 17 League two basketball – Westlake C toppled the league leaders Birkenhead on Monday 20 July. Coached by Mr Gibson and captained by Grieg Tuaine, Westlake led after the first quarter but was held scoreless in the second by a spirited Birkenhead team. They trailed until the final minute where both teams exchanged three pointers, a crucial three banked from Joel Remigio. Trailing by one in the final 30 seconds it took a steal and a trip to the line for Captain Grieg to bank two clutch free throws winning the game by 1 point. Able to field an almost identical 5 on the court in the Jones Twins and the Tu’inukuafe triplets and with an aggressive full court press this team is placed well to achieve its goal. Mr Gibson would also like to thank all the Westlake supporters on the side-line at the game. It certainly made for an exciting finish. Special mention to international student Tim Lin from Taiwan who is in his first year at Westlake Boys’ High School. He trialled, made the A team in U17 League 2 and has become a valuable player averaging 8-10 points and becoming a top rebounder. Well done Tim it’s really great to see you embracing WBHS sport. To all international students Tim Lin is a great example at how joining a sporting team can really help you enjoy Westlake and make new friends. |

Youth Basketball of America National Championship |
|||
Adam Singer, Ethan Clark and Marshall Cairns-Hita from Year 9 and Mark Wellacott from Year 10 travelled to the USA to take part in the Youth Basketball of America National Championship during the holidays. They went with Coach Carl Buck who is an American coach they train with. Carl is well regarded in the basketball scene training many up and coming players from New Zealand. The boys all play Basketball for our school and Adam and Ethan are in the Basketball Institute.The competition was a fantastic experience for the boys, who came close, but unfortunately didn’t win any games. This was their first time playing in the States, and the game was fast paced with an aggressive style of play, which they are not used to playing in New Zealand. However, this gave them an opportunity to see how basketball is played in the USA as well as an insight into what they are up against if they decide to take the scholarship route in a few years.

1st XI Hockey vs Pakuranga College 5-0 winThe 1st XI travelled to Lloyd Elsmore Park for the start of Term 3 hockey on 22 July. With a few injuries and illnesses we were down to two substitutes but the boys stepped up and kept to the game plan well. Nerves were settled when Keegan Russell slotted home a rebound and then JP Rossouw calmly put another in the corner. A further 3 goals were scored through Benji Edwards, Jord Glandorf and Mitchell Ottow in the second half. It was comprehensive win but there are still areas which Westlake have to tidy up before the team heads to Nationals at Lloyd Elsmore in 5 weeks’ time. |
|||
2nd XI vs Orewa College 1st XI 9-0 winOur 2nd XI played their best hockey of the season. Considering they hit the crossbar twice, it was a solid performance with 4 goals coming from Penalty Corners – a convincing 9-0 win. |
|||
3rd XI vs Birkenhead College 1st XI 4-0 winCongratulations to Daniel Young who scored 3 of the 4 goals for the 3rd XI. Daniel is a mid-fielder and a defence player which makes this all the more impressive. |

Squash Success |

Premier Squash team members Rafa Yam, Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam reaped success at the North Island Age Group Championships in Wellington during the last weekend of the school holidays. This is one of New Zealand’s largest Squash tournaments for juniors with participants numbering to 175 players from both the North and South Islands.Coming from a runner-up finish at last week’s South Island Age Group Championships in Blenheim, Rafa came back stronger to capture the Boys Under 17 title in Wellington and stayed true to his New Zealand number 1 ranking in his age division. 15 year old Matthew Lucente, playing in his first year in the U17 age group, proved he can challenge the older boys with his impressive win in the playoffs for third place.
New Zealand Under 15 number 1, Gabe Yam, was too strong and unchallenged in the Boys U15 division, winning the title without dropping a single game throughout the tournament. |

Westlakers’ London Reunion July 2015 |
|||
The Admiralty pub in Trafalgar Square was the venue for the recent Westlakers London Reunion, where David Ferguson was pleased to host Westlakers from several different decades. The numbers included Tony Evans and Stuart Wilson, two foundation students from the original Westlake High School, and two of our most recent leavers, from 2014, Wesley Healiss and Harry Calverley. The London reunion is a regular feature in the Westlake calendar. It’s always good to catch up with Westlakers, wherever they are in the world, and as ever they all enjoyed the opportunity to share some good stories and memories of their times at school.
Westlaker Jacky Siu – 2015 ROSL Music Scholarship |
|||
Westlaker Jacky Siu (2009-2012) and his cello quartet, ‘Quattro’, are about to head to Europe after taking first place in the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) Chamber Music Competition and winning the 2015 ROSL Music Scholarship. They are the youngest all-cello group in New Zealand and are all Sir Edmund Hillary scholars from the University of Waikato, Jacky, 18, Sam Lucas, 19, Alexander Swale, 20, and Catherine Kwak, 17. The prize is a fully-funded six week trip to the UK, ‘acting as professional musicians on tour’, playing and attending concerts and music festivals and meeting international musicians and teachers.
The competition involved two 30-minute performances to a panel of judges. “The calibre of performances was really high, which made it hard to keep topping our performance each time,” says Jacky. “The judges actually considered the chemistry of the group in their deliberations which makes sense if we’re going to be travelling together for six weeks in a foreign country.” The Bachelor of Music students rehearse together most days which means they’re very close.Senior lecturer and cello tutor, James Tennant, applauds ‘Quattro’ and their serious work ethic, saying that this trip will open many doors for this group of “extremely talented kids”.
