Dear Parents and GuardiansWe have had an action packed week two of Term with lots of activities going on. It has been Maori Language week, our own Languages Week, we had our Information Evening last night and the week culminated today with our first ever Grandparents Day which was a great success. Thank you to all the grandparents that came along, and to the PTA for organising the refreshments for all of our guests both today and last night at the Information Evening. If you have some time available next Thursday evening, I would highly recommend the Gala Concert. It is a real highlight of our annual calendar – details are below. Have a nice weekend. Regards |

2015 Grandparents’ Day |
|||
This morning Westlake Boys hosted our first-ever Grandparents’ Day. 250 grandparents joined their grandsons for a school tour, followed by Assembly and a particularly lively morning tea. The occasion was a special highlight of a particularly busy Westlake week.Amidst the Westlake grandparents who enjoyed a morning in the company of their grandsons were four former Westlake students and an additional 40 grandparents who were last involved with Westlake when their own sons attended several years ago.
As Westlake Boys heads into its second half century we find ourselves in the exciting position of creating traditions, such as Grandparents’ Day, that will become part of Westlake culture.Judging by the enthusiastic, happy family groups who were part of our inaugural Grandparents’ Day, it’s heartening to know that, as extended family members become increasingly involved with the school’s activities, the Westlake experience will be enhanced for all members of our community for many years to come.
More images will be uploaded on the Westlake Boys Facebook page soon.
International Languages Week |
|||
This week, Westlake Boys High School celebrated the Maori Language Week and the International Languages Week. It is a great opportunity for our whole school community to celebrate our proud Maori heritage, embrace our vibrant and diverse cultures and consider the importance of languages in shaping our own cultural identities and global perspectives. This week has been an action-packed week, too. The whole staff learned a Waiata and practiced our Maori pronunciation. Form classes had fun having a go at guessing what additional languages our talented staff can speak. The Year 9 students were engaged in a cross-curricular “FIFA” project which looked at the impact of sports on various cultures. Laurence Larson, a Kiwi musician working in China, talked to our Chinese students about how languages has opened doors for him. Other cultural activities that took place in class included calligraphy, cooking, origami and a Karaoke competition. The list goes on. We are pleased that the Maori Language Week and the International Languages Week have been so well-received and we would like to thank everyone who has supported us.

1st XV vs Takapuna Grammar SchoolWith the Woodhouse Shield at stake for the home match, Westlake started off with some receptive errors, putting themselves under pressure in the first 15 minutes of the match. Sturdy Westlake defence kept Takapuna Grammar at bay for long periods at a time with only a penalty kick as their reward for maintaining possession of the ball. Once Westlake managed to control their own ball, the game flowed more freely and the team finished the first half with two converted tries and a penalty, taking the lead at half time to 17-3. The second half was a more comforting display by the home team and with Ammon Moller asserting his presence on the game, the ball movement was outstanding. Westlake showed off its skills that might have been lacking in their play earlier in the season. Fine Inisi had a memorable game with some scintillating runs through the Takapuna Grammar defence. Izaak Scheib continued to exert his dominance inspiring his fellow team mates to follow his lead. With the final whistle score at 43-17, the convincing win maintains Westlake’s nine point lead in the competition with only one game left in round robin against the formidable Massey High School away on Saturday 1 August. |
|||
2nd XI vs Mahurangi CollegeThe Westlake 2nd XV clinched a tight victory against Mahurangi 1st XV on Saturday. Westlake were caught napping from the kick off and conceded 7 points within the opening minute of the game. This was swiftly followed up by a second try by Mahurangi thanks to weak Westlake defense. Westlake had to weather a number of follow up attacks but managed to stop the bleeding at 14-0. Westlake showed incredible determination and maturity to run in two of their own tries both by Jack Fuller and a penalty by Cameron Abrahamse. This meant going into the break trailing by just one point. Geoff Heck crossed for the only points of the second half and gave Westlake an 18-14 victory. The boys can take great pride in their fightback but will need to shore up their defense in the coming weeks. |

Westlake 1st XI edged in close encounterWestlake first XI football team faced off against unbeaten St Kentigerns College and beaten 1-0 in a close and physical premier league match. Playing at home Westlake started brightly and Jaidyn Hendriks went close when he headed a cross just wide of the goal. The game was dominated by a fiercely contested midfield battle with Oscar Ramsay and Bronson Kelly stand out performers for the home team. Both teams had several half chances to take the lead but good defending meant there was no score heading to the half time break. This didn’t look like changing until St Kents won a free kick 25 yards from the Westlake goal. Westlake keeper Flinn Medmeblik parried the shot but a St Kents player was first to the loose ball and tucked the ball home for 1 1-0 lead. The second half was just as keenly contested with both sides defences dominating. Jaidyn Hendriks had Westlake’s best opportunity to score when he found space in the box but could not beat the keeper. Westlake’s centre back pairing of Michael Booth and Luke Johnson were outstanding as they repelled many St Kentigerns attacks with Medmeblik also making some vital saves. Unfortunately Westlake could not find an equalizer and the final whistle sounded with St Kents still leading 1-0. Westlake play away at Sacred Heart Co0llege this Saturday, 12 noon kick off. |

WBHS 1st XI vs Mount Albert Grammar School 1st XIWestlake travelled to Mount Roskill Grammar where the team played against Mount Albert Grammar. Both teams struggled to adapt to the turf conditions and neither team managed to string too many passes together. Captain Mitchell Ottow opened the score in the first half and when MAGS changed their structure to combat Westlake’s tactics, a half time change to its own structure led to a few more attacking opportunities for the Westlake team. Benji Edwards, Wesley Sleep and Mitchell Ottow added more goals taking the final score to 4-0. In the end it was a good tactical game of hockey and a thorough test for our boys from the Mount Albert Grammar team. |

2nd XI vs Kingsway SchoolThe 2nd XI had one of their toughest games of the season. Kingsway have an exceptional keeper and anything hit straight, or anywhere near him, was saved. We realised that we were going to have to make deflections and change the direction of the ball, if we wanted to score. The first goal was a good field goal and was scored by Pablo Mayer in the 12th minute. The second goal came from a PC and after a bit of a scramble, Konnor Baker managed to put it away. Kingsway came back strong and scored with a very good drag flick, from a PC. With about 4 minutes left in the half, our team stepped up the pressure and Pablo Meyer managed to score our third goal. After the break, Kingsway put us under a lot of pressure and the team had to defend hard not to give away any goals. We conceded two PC’s but managed to keep them out. We then worked the ball out of our D and got it up to our forwards. Pablo lined up for his hat trick and drew the keeper out. He slipped it past the keeper and passed it straight to Tony Brinkman, who put it away. Kingsway changed their playing formation and stepped up the pressure again. They scored a good field goal and followed that up shortly with yet another. The team took a little time to settle down and just held onto the ball. The team worked it out of the back, transferred it through the field and up into our forwards. We had a beautiful base line run, slipped it to the awaiting forwards and Cam Jones-Moore put it in the net for our fifth goal. That was the final goal of the evening. Westlake 5 – 3 Kingsway. |

Cameron Webster | |||
Westlaker Cameron Webster was part of the mens coxed four crew that won silver at the 2015 Under-23 World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last Sunday. The Kiwi crew of Louis van Velthooven, Drikus Conradie, Cameron Webster, Corey McCaffrey and coxswain Sam Bosworth had a tremendous sprint to pull almost level with the Italians into the finish line. Italy came away with the Gold in 6:24.57 with New Zealand claiming silver in 6:24.78. |
|
||
Cameron, who was Westlake Boys Rower of the Year in 2012 and 2013 has an amazing record to date including seven New Zealand titles and one world title.
Max O’Dowd | |||
Westlaker Max O’Dowd represented The Netherlands at the ICC Cricket World Twenty20 Qualifier played in Scotland and Ireland earlier this month. The Dutch finished second in pool play allowing them two more chances to qualify for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 Tournament in India. The Netherlands won their next match defeating Namibia by four wickets. As a result of that win, The Netherlands booked their tickets to the 2016 ICC T20 International tournament. Namibia held out hope for an unlikely victory after Bernard Scholtz spun through Netherlands middle order with 3 for 14 to leave the them at 103 for 5 in the 15th over, needing 136 to win. |
|
||
However, Max and Roelof van der Merwe put on a 30-run stand before Mudassar Bukhari hit the winning boundary through cover with four balls to spare. The Men in Orange shared the tournament trophy with Scotland after having defeated Ireland in the semi-final. The final last Sunday was rained off. Max is following in the cricket footsteps of his Westlaker Dad, 80’s Westlake and Auckland cricketer Alex O’Dowd.
We are very proud of these two recent Westlake leavers who are living their dreams and, at the same time, achieving great things on the world stage!
