The Premier Water Polo team competed at Nationals over the holiday break and performed well despite having a string of injuries and players out for numerous games. With resident goalie, Reuben Barr out due to finger surgery, the team called upon Senior B goalie, Stuart Hofmeyr, who performed well against some tough opposition. The Year 11 student gained valuable experience throughout the competition, along with another Year 11 student, Brian Lee who stepped up from Senior B play.

Despite several close games, the team couldn’t qualify into the top 8, only just missing out by 1 goal. Ending up in the plate final, the team narrowly lost 11-10 in a close match to Mount Albert Grammar School, gaining 10th place in New Zealand.

Game results:

  • 8-6 win against Sacred Heart College A 2
  • 6-13 loss against St. Kentigern College
  • 8-6 loss to Green Bay High School
  • 9-2 win against Palmerston North Boys High School
  • 8-7 win against St Peter’s College
  • 10-11 loss to Mount Albert Grammar School for 9th/10th Plate Final

Congratulations to 2016 New Zealand Secondary School winners Rangitoto College, coached by Westlaker Alex Mackenzie. The team defeated St. Kentigern College in a close and exciting match.  Westlake Girls High School coached by Westlaker Steve Knights took out the national title in the girls division.
