WBHS 1st XI vs Mount Albert Grammar School 1st XI
Westlake travelled to Mount Roskill Grammar where the team played against Mount Albert Grammar. Both teams struggled to adapt to the turf conditions and neither team managed to string too many passes together. Captain Mitchell Ottow opened the score in the first half and when MAGS changed their structure to combat Westlake’s tactics, a half time change to its own structure led to a few more attacking opportunities for the Westlake team. Benji Edwards, Wesley Sleep and Mitchell Ottow added more goals taking the final score to 4-0. In the end it was a good tactical game of hockey and a thorough test for our boys from the Mount Albert Grammar team.
WBHS 2nd XI vs Kingsway School
The 2nd XI had one of their toughest games of the season. Kingsway have an exceptional keeper and anything hit straight, or anywhere near him, was saved. The Westlake team realised that it needed to make deflections and change the direction of the ball to score. The first goal was a good field goal scored by Pablo Mayer in the 12th minute. The second goal came from a PC and after a bit of a scramble, Konnor Baker managed to put it away. Kingsway came back strong and scored with a very good drag flick, from a PC. With about four minutes left in the half, Westlake stepped up the pressure and Pablo Meyer managed to score our third goal.
After the break, Kingsway put Westlake under a lot of pressure and the team had to defend hard not to give away any goals. Westlake conceded two PC’s but managed to keep out the opposition, working the ball out of our defence up to the forwards. Pablo Mayer lined up for his hattrick and drew the keeper out. He slipped it past the keeper and passed it straight to Tony Brinkman, who put it away. Kingsway changed their playing formation and stepped up the pressure again. They scored a good field goal and followed that up shortly with yet another. Westlake took a little time to settle down just holding on to the ball. They worked the ball out of the back, transferred it through the field and up into the forwards. A beautiful base line run followed and the ball was slipped to the awaiting forwards for Cam Jones-Moore to put it in the net for the team’s fifth goal taking the score to 5 – 3 to Westlake at the final whistle.
