Dear Parents and GuardiansWe’ve had an exciting week with the National Big Sing Results, North Harbour Rugby Final, KBB Music Festival and many more things going on in school. Well done to all of the young men who continue to represent and support our school with pride. Monday sees the start of our senior internal examinations. The time given for study leave is to enable our young men to have enough time to do themselves justice in the examinations. Please support us in ensuring that studying is their number one focus over the next two weeks. Good luck to all sports teams this week, we have lots of important fixtures coming up. Have a nice weekend. David Ferguson Headmaster |

Voicemale Take Gold at The Big Sing National Finale 2015 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Voicemale, our 61 member choir conducted by Mr David Squire, spent a successful five days in Wellington for The Big Sing National Finale last week. The boys worked really hard, presenting three public concerts and two recitals in the competition. There were 23 other choirs from around New Zealand competing, so it was also a good chance to interact with singers from other parts of the country.
After many, many hours of practise all year it was great to see the choir give their best efforts when it really mattered. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
One of the highlights was performing a powerful Festival Gloria, written by Craig Courtney and accompanied by members from the NZSO, whose superb musicianship inspired Voicemale immensely.
Two crowd favourites were the fun “Coffee in a Cardboard Cup” (complete with Starbucks cups!) and Howler Monkey, a work written especially for Voicemale by Westlake old boy Robbie Ellis. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The week culminated in a Gala concert on the Saturday evening where Voicemale were awarded a Gold Award, putting them amongst the top 6 choirs in the country. Thanks must go to their conductor David Squire, accompanist Sheryl Clarke, and the support crew of Warwick Robinson, Hayley Barker and Julian Latimer for making sure everyone was in the right place at the right time, looking smart and ready to sing!

2015 KBB Music Festival |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hot on the heels of Voicemale’s success at the National Big Sing Finale, Westlake’s instrumental musicians are hoping for accolades this week at the KKB Music Festival. The KBMF is always a highlight in the music department calendar as it largest festival in New Zealand for bands and orchestras.
All the school’s ensembles take part – the all-boys Symphonic Band, Stage Band, Conchordia and Camerata String Orchestras, as well as joint groups with Westlake Girls High School – including Taharoto Orchestra and the premier ensembles Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Big Band and Concert Band. These groups work hard throughout the year preparing programmes of challenging and varied material, with many hours of before and after school and lunchtime rehearsals, not to mention the additional hours each student spends practising at home. Each ensemble presents a recital of around 25 minutes to a panel of judges and an audience of parents, friends and other competing schools at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell and the adjacent St. Mary’s Chapel.
The top four ensembles in each category are invited to perform at the two gala concerts on Saturday. As at time of writing, two of Westlake’s premier ensembles have been selected to play, with further results still to be announced – Westlake Chamber Orchestra at 2.30 pm and Westlake Symphony Orchestra at 6.30pm, both at Holy Trinity Cathedral. Look out in the newsletter next week for an update on the overall results.

Leave from School |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
When students apply for leave from Westlake Boys’ High School, and that leave is ‘unapproved’ (in the case of family holidays), this leave does not entitle students to gain extensions for any assessments that are due. We suggest that students hand in their work before they take the leave, if it is unapproved.

North Harbour Rugby 1st XV Final
Commiserations to Westlake’s 1st XV who last night were narrowly beaten by Rosmini College in the North Harbour Rugby 1st XV final. With only one point separating the teams, it was Rosmini who prevailed to take out the 2015 North Harbour 1st Championship title at a packed QBE Stadium last night. Congratulations to Rosmini College and to all the Westlake players and coaching staff who have worked so hard throughout the season.
Thank you to the many Westlake supporters who painted QBE Stadium red, white and green and showed their support for their team. The match report with images of last night’s final will be published in next week’s newsletter. |

WBHS 1st XV vs Rangitoto College 1st XV, semi-final
Westlake Boys played Rangitoto College in front of their home crowd in the semi-final of the North Harbour 1st XV competition. With a hard fought away win against Westlake earlier in the season and a finals spot at Harbour stadium on the line, the Rangitoto team started the game energised from the kickoff. They were awarded a penalty almost immediately when Westlake was penalised for holding onto the ball.
Westlake retaliated from their kickoff battering their opponent on attack. Kanui Walker gained good yards and made it possible for the Westlake forwards to keep the ball in play. Blake Houghton managed to get hold of the ball and scored the first try of the day converted by Sam Babb who definitely had his kicking boots on securing the three penalties that were awarded to Westlake.
Rangitoto added 3 more from a penalty but from there on it was the Westlake team who dominated the game. Lotu Inisi, Fine Inisi and Logan Lawrence threatened the Rangitoto defence with an awesome attack which was finished off with Logan scoring a try. It did not take Westlake long to score their next try after securing the ball in a line out, Calvin Vari side-stepped through the Rangi defense and scored his try of the day. Half time score Westlake 26-Rangitoto 6.
The first twenty minutes of the second half was game on and Rangitoto tried to attack with every possession of the ball. Yet Westlake performed impeccably in defence, an area in which they have grown from strength to strength throughout their season. Westlake continued to attack their opponents’ defensive line and were able to score a try with Ammon Moller surprising Rangitoto with a flick of the ball to Cameron Hey to score his try for the day converted by Sam Babb. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Rangitoto were adamant not to give up but Jack Heighton managed to intercept the ball to score a try under the goal post, again converted by Sam Babb. Logan Lawrence finished the game with another try taking the final scoreline out to 45-6.
The win secured Westlake a final spot against archrivals Rosmini College in the North Harbour 1st XV final at Harbour Stadium this Thursday. The match is a curtain raiser for the North Harbour vs Wellington ITM Cup match. Kick-off 5.35pm. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
WBHS 2nd XV vs Massey High School 2nd XV The Westlake 2nd XV produced probably their best performance of the season in testing conditions on Saturday. Playing a spirited Massey team, home semi-finals were riding on this result. Westlake played to the condition brilliantly, controlling field position and coming away with points every time they were on offer. Thomas Red and Cameron Abrahamse kicked beautifully out of hand and off the tee. The workrate of Geoff Heck and Declan Barbarich made sure Westlake enjoyed quality front foot ball. In the end Westlake ran out comfortable winners by 25-0. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
WBHS 4th XV vs Kristin School 1st XV In what proved to be their last game of the season, the fighting fourths came undone to a better prepared Kristin School 1st XV who made the most of a couple of moments of weakness in the 4ths defence. Westlake played with passion dominating in patches and scored two well executed tries, one to captain Tommy Smith and one to Patrick Corcoran. Early in the second half with their line under threat the team defended and prevented Kristin from scoring, showing great team character and unity. The second half saw both teams score unconverted tries, however the game was won by Kristin 24 to 12. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
It was the end to a gusty season by a team that played well above themselves against mostly teams with small numbers in front of the XV. Thanks firstly to Hatu Tiakia and Callum Dickison for their help with the coaching of the team and the stalwart parents who have supported their sons. The biggest thanks to the players for the pleasure of making Saturday mornings an enjoyable time for the coach. Boys, well done!

Westlake find their scoring touch in a nine goal thriller
Westlake’s first XI football team found their scoring form, breaking a run of three scoreless performances, to edge out Mount Albert Grammar School in a thrilling 5-4 home win. The home team was forced into several changes due to suspension, illness and injury and were rewarded with standout performances by newcomers and established players alike.
Westlake started on the front foot and had MAGS defending in depth early on. They took the lead in spectacular style after only three minutes when right back Keanen Bhagaloo delivered a searching cross and striker Jaidyn Hendriks improvised with a gravity defying overhead kick that flew into the top corner of the net from 15 yards. Surely the goal of the season. Jaidyn Hendriks striking partner Braeden Acarapi then had a chance to score when he attacked another right sided cross, but his effort was blocked for a corner.
MAGS were then awarded a free kick inside the Westlake penalty area after a supposed deliberate pass back to Zac White. However the Westlake defensive wall stood firm and the resulting shot was well blocked. Unfortunately Westlake failed to heed the warning and MAGS equalized soon after when they took a free kick quickly, catching the home side napping, before crossing to an unmarked player who stroked the ball home unchallenged. Bronson Kelly then had his close range shot blocked after he had timed his run well to get onto a near post cross from the right.
Westlake were making real inroads down their right flank and it was from this channel that they regained the lead. This time it was Braeden Acarapi providing an inch perfect cross for Jaidyn Hendriks who made no mistake with a well-placed header from 12 yards out. MAGS replied by pinning the home side into their defensive third, winning several corners. However Westlake extended their lead when they broke from one of these set pieces. Jack Pirie cleared to Jaidyn Hendriks who flicked the ball on to the speedy Sean Skeens who ran at the MAGS defense before beating the keeper with a low, left foot drive. The final act of the first half saw Zac White, in the Westlake goal, pull of an acrobatic save when he tipped a shot that was destined for the top corner over the bar.
After such a hectic first half one might have expected a slower pace in the second spell, however this certainly was not the case as both sides went at each other with renewed energy. Daniel Lim replaced Keanen Bhagaloo at right back, otherwise Westlake’s lineup remained unchanged. Westlake looked to have put the match beyond the visitors when they made it 4-1 after 56 minutes. Good pressure high up the field led to Sean Skeens running through the heart of the MAGS defense, drawing the keeper and finishing calmly with his right foot. However, straight from the restart MAGS pulled a goal back after some weak tackling allowed their winger to score from the edge of the penalty area. Jaidyn Hendriks continued to torment the MAGS defense as he out-paced his marker before squaring the ball across the goal. Unfortunately he had also out-paced his support and the chance went begging.
The striker should have had his hat trick shortly after when the MAGS keeper gave the ball away and Jaidyn Hendriks drove his shot towards the empty goal, only to see it rebound off the post. Minutes later he was through on goal again but this time the keeper did well to steal the ball as the striker attempted to dribble past. The Jaidyn Hendriks hat trick did arrive when Zac White’s accurate throw released the striker who cut inside from the left and smashed a right footed shot into the top corner of the MAGS goal. A tiring Braedan Acarapi, who had proved a great foil for Jaidyn Hendriks, was replaced by Brad Cain.
At 5-2, there was still drama to come. Some more loose defending allowed MAGS to score and when their striker headed a cross over the stranded White for 5-4, Westlake nerves began jangling. However, some desperate defending allowed the home team to see out the final seconds and celebrate an important victory. In an outstanding team performance it was difficult to single out individuals but Jaidyn Hendriks hat trick was impressive and his striking partner Sean Skeens was a constant threat. Luke Johnson and Michael Booth were solid at the centre of defense and Zac White made some important saves. Jack Pirie and Bronson Kelly were tireless in midfield and Braedan Acarapi put in a valuable cameo.
Westlake finish their Premier league campaign with a home match against Kings College next Saturday, 12noon kick off. The team then travel to Nelson for the Secondary Schools National Tournament from 31st August- 4th September. Team: Zac White, Jack Pirie, Michael Booth ©, Clarke Foulds, Luke Johnson, Bronson Kelly, Keanen Bhagaloo, Sean Skeens, Braedan Acarapi, View Rungpao and Jaidyn Hendriks. Subs: Daniel Lim, Brad Cain, Trent Baker, Finn Medemblik. Scorers: Jaidyn Hendriks (3), Sean Skeens (2) Photographs of the match have been uploaded to the Westlake Boys school website. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
WBHS 2nd XI vs Mount Albert Grammar School 2nd XI
The 2nd XI had a hard fought home game versus MAGS. A win or draw in this game would see them secure 3rd place for the season. Westlake gave a penalty away in the first half, and then MAGS followed this up with a well taken goal. The second half Westlake stepped up and scored 2 goals to get a 2 all draw. A good fight back and a game in which Westlake could have had a few more goals. |

WBHS 1st XI v Kristin School 1st XI
For the fourth time this season Westlake Boys 1st XI Hockey were up against Kristin School’s 1st XI in the semi-finals of the Auckland Supercity competition, played at the North Harbour Hockey turf on Wednesday evening. Throughout the competition both teams have shown excellent improvement and, with a finals spot at stake, it was Westlake who continued their winning streak, completing another consistent performance on the night. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Westlake controlled the match from the start but some solid Kristin defence enabled the team to capitalise on some early chances. In the end, quick passing allowed Wesley Sleep to add to his goal tally for the season followed by a super shot from Jord Glandorf which resulted in a nice deflection for Mitchell Ottow.
In the second half Wesley Sleep finished off a great passing move, Benji Edwards fired home and Jord Glandorf slipped one past the Kristin goalkeeper. Kristin did cause the Westlake defence some problems and managed to put away a deserved penalty corner. With the final score 5-1 to Westlake, the team will now play King’s College for top honours in the Auckland Supercity competition next Wednesday at the Harbour Hockey turf at 6.25pm. |

Hockey – Pitu Shield, St Paul’s Collegiate School Hamilton
Without their Captain Mitchell Ottow due to illness, the Westlake 1st XI Hockey team were on the bus to Hamilton early Saturday morning. The team arrived at St Paul’s and after a quick team talk prepared to take on rivals Tauranga Boys. Westlake managed to keep Tauranga’s influential players at bay and were soon ahead after a sneaky tackle by Ben Williams led to a one on one which he calmly slotted away. Goals in the second half were well taken by Jord Glandorf (2) and Benji Edwards to give Westlake a slightly flattering 4-0 score line.
For their fine efforts the boys were rewarded with an evening activity of Go kart racing – Ben Williams getting the fastest lap (parents beware, he’s got faster driving skills than Messrs McCracken and Meredith).
On Sunday, Westlake did not talk about the chance to bring home two important trophies but instead the team focused on tactics and how to beat a very good St Paul’s hockey outfit. With both teams missing their captains, it was Jord Glandorf who opened the score for Westlake with a well taken goal. Keegan Russell, Sachin Chhiba and Peter Felstead managed to add one more each resulting in a 4-0 win and two trophies, the ‘Pitu Family Shield’ and the ‘Bartholomew Cup’. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Pitu Family Shield is awarded to the best team over the weekend and the Bartholomew Cup, one that is very close to Westlake’s heart, is the school boy hockey equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield, a prestigious national Challenge Cup for New Zealand Secondary Boys School Hockey. The cup is named after the hockey-passionate Bartholomew family who have put hundreds, if not, thousands of hours into Westlake Boys and New Zealand hockey and whose three sons Westlakers Samuel, Joseph and Elliot went through Westlake Boys. Since the inaugural Bartholomew Cup match was played during the annual Winter Sports Exchange against Tauranga Boys College in 2013, only three schools have held the cup so far. Westlake delighted and proud to have the Bartholomew Cup back where it belongs.

Last Friday Westlake took on Rangitoto College in a top of the table clash to see who would finish as the top seed in the Auckland Premier Competition, going into the semi-finals next week. Both teams were missing players who were away on National duties or injured. At the start the game, Rangitoto came out firing, especially Isaac Davidson who put Rangitoto in front with a great shooting performance.
Westlake had built a hole for themselves that they knew they needed to pull themselves out of. After being down 10 points going into the second quarter, Westlake started to fight back. Matt Freeman spurred the team on offensively, getting inside to start cutting away at the deficit. Defensively Logan Hunt stuck like glue to Davidson, not letting him get the ball and this cooled off his hot shooting start. After holding Rangitoto to 7 points for the quarter, Westlake were up 2 points at the half.
Westlake wanted to build on the momentum in the third quarter but it was Rangitoto who came out of the half firing, and they led the whole 3rd quarter, going into the final break 3 points up. Westlake, as they have done many times this year, took control of the fourth quarter. They started to move the ball effectively, getting some great open looks. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Westlake’s big men, Joel Coffey and Matt Freeman started to dominate both offensive and defensive boards. Alex Yang used his speed to stretch the floor and get himself some great open looks that he knocked down. Westlake kept taking it inside, finishing strong at the rim or getting Rangitoto into foul trouble. Isaac Davidson fouling out with a couple of minutes to play, didn’t help Rangitoto as they tried to mount a comeback. Westlake managed to keep control of the game and iced it with some great free-throw shooting at the close. Westlake took the win 84-77.
Matt Freeman came up big for Westlake getting 35 points to go with 13 rebounds. Guards Alex Yang and Isaac Letoa had great all-around games, Alex shooting well to score 19 points and Isaac getting 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Joel Coffey’s rebounding (14 rebounds) especially in the 4th quarter was huge and Logan Hunt’s tenacious defence on Rangitoto’s Davidson was a key to the win.
Tonight the team face Onehunga in the Semi-finals at NSEC, tip-off 7.30pm. Your support would be much appreciated! |
