Pasifika Celebration Night |
On Thursday 5 November, we hosted our fourth Pasifika Celebration Evening. Guest speaker, Dr Puni, a prominent member of the Samoan community and Orator was relentless in his message to students outlining that there is no replacement for hard work and to be respectful of the education they receive. Westlakers and previous award winners Logan Poloai and Mostafa Yousseff reinforced this message and shared their experiences as they progress through university.
Pasifika Excellence award winner, Jaepeth Tiakia, spoke on behalf of the students, acknowledging the efforts of parents and family in raising our fine young men and allowing them the opportunities to succeed as Pasifika students.

The large crowd were entertained on three occasions with Miriam Yousseff from Westlake Girls High School performing an exquisite Samoan song, Joshua Timiiti reciting a powerful piece of poetry and the combined Westlake Pasifika group concluding the evening with a traditional dance. Acknowledgements also must go to our Pasifika Parents Komiti, in particular Pandy Fruen and Gladys Yousseff for making the night such a success. |

Year 13 NCEA studentsAs we approach the NCEA external assessment season, we would like all Year 13 NCEA students to complete a very short questionnaire for us. This will help us guide students when their results are released in January. Please log on to “iLearn”, or through the “parent portal”. Once there, please tick the box next to the statements that are appropriate to you (or your son):
When the results arrive in January, we check whether students have achieved University Entrance. If you (or your son) has not achieved University Entrance, and the box next to question 3 has been ticket, you (or your son) will be contacted by the Senior Academic Dean.
Can I take this opportunity, too, to remind everyone that it is essential that your son prepares fully for his external assessments, and that he should attempt all standards. Failure to complete all standards, and failure to use all of the time allowed (by leaving early, for example) led to some students last year failing to attain University Entrance. Good luck to all of our senior students in their exams. |

PTA Morning TeaThank you to our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and friends of the school who arranged a Guy Fawkes themed morning tea for staff on Thursday 5 November. All members of our staff (approximately 200 people) really enjoyed the fabulous decorations, delicious morning tea and everyone was thrilled to receive a gift. This event is eagerly looked forward to every year. Thank you to everyone who is involved to make the morning special. |

The Graduation Dinner offers our leavers, their parents or caregivers as well as Westlake Boys staff an important opportunity to share a celebration that officially recognises the completion of the boys’ years at Westlake Boys High School. It is also the official farewell to the departing students and to wish them well for their futures as Westlakers. The evenings’ proceedings will include an address by 1960’s old boy and international businessman, and man of many talents, Mr John Burland, a formal graduation ceremony and a Valedictory Speech.
Tickets are on sale until Friday 20 November. Attached is a copy of the information letter and permission and ticket order form available to download from the school website. Space is limited so tickets will be sold on a first-in, first-served basis with a limit of three tickets per family. We recommend that you purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment. |

WBHS 1st XI v Mount Albert Grammar School
The first day of the penultimate Championship match against Mount Albert Grammar School proved to be a fascinating contest with 24 wickets falling on the day. MAGS were bowled out for 101, with Cooper Spiller knocking over the top order with 2/3 while Wesley Sleep took 5/8 off 5 overs with his ultra-slow change ups. Westlake were in early trouble at 30/5 and struggled to 115 all out, thereby winning the first innings. Opener Adam Baard carried his team’s innings with a superb 50, while Ryan Doubell clobbered a quick 27. The day ended with MAGS on 30/4, after Cooper Spiller had another excellent bowling spell with 3/14. |
WBHS 2nd XI v Auckland Grammar School 2nd XICaptain Redpath won the toss and elected to bat on a flat Grammar track. Openers Knowles and Young batted well to blunt the new ball which allowed an excellent partnership of 107 between Cameron Abrahamse 93 (who was unfortunate not to get to his ton) and debutant Sid Mahajan 52 to power us 213/6. We knew the afternoon was going to be tough and the first Grammar wicket fell on 97 and the second on 142 due a great piece of keeping from Carl Kirstein. Consistent line and length ensured the run rate became an issue for Grammar and they were unable to break free. All the bowlers chipped in and restricted Grammar to 195/6. A really good win by 18 runs. |
WBHS 3rd XI v Kristin SchoolKristin School won the toss and batted first to score 174/9 in their 45 overs. Best bowlers were Shreyas Borgaonkar 3/25 and Andrew Wickens 3/50. We conceded 50 wides! Westlake were 92 all out, a loss by 82 runs. |
Colts 1 v St Kentigern SchoolWestlake’s Colt 1 team had a very good game albeit with a loss against St Kents. We batted first and lost 4 wickets by the 15th over. A solid 97 run partnership from Jock McKenzie and Ryan Zent, who both got 40s took us through to 155/8 at the end of 45 overs. Although we lost by 9 wickets we took them to two overs to go before St Kents scored the runs. |
Premier TennisWell done to our Premier Tennis team who played St Kentigern College last weekend in the Auckland final. There were some tight games which ended up going St Kentigern College’s way. Congratulations to Matej Minic at No. 1 who won both of his games. |
